Synopsis Wanderings Among the High Alps (Classic Reprint) by : Alfred Wills
Excerpt from Wanderings Among the High Alps It has always appeared to me that ladies might see much more of the grander scenery of the High Alps than they usually do and it will be a pleasure to me, if I have succeeded in showing, by the instances recorded in the following pages, how much it is really practicable, with due care and suficient precautions, for one of the gentler sex to undertake. The expedition which forms the subject of Chapter II is as feasible for any other lady, as for the lady who actually performed it - who is a fair, but by no means a particularly good, walker. Synopsis The Alps by : Ronald Clark
The unrivalled scenery of the Alps attracts increasing numbers of visitors every year, while for those who seek the more active and dangerous pursuits of climbing and skiing, the region offers unique opportunities. Ronald Clark, a distinguished historian of mountaineering, who knows the Alps from end to end, describes the history of the mountains and their most famous peaks. The heroic story of their exploration, first by scientists, then by such early mountaineers as Whymper, Coolidge, Miss Brevoort and their guides, is related with extensive quotations from letters, diaries and contemporary records. With the mountaineers came the pioneer photographers whose cumbersome but fragile equipment had to be manhandled up ice-slopes and across glaciers to enable them to take their photographs, a procedure which necessitated hours of intricate manoeuvring, in freezing weather, to obtain one successful shot. Other chapters discuss the development of the Alps as a mountain health centre, the coming of roads and railways and the growth of the winter sports industry and Mr Clark warns that the mountains, like a Highland deer forest, can carry only a certain number of living creatures without facing disaster.

Synopsis Wanderings Through Unknown Austria (Classic Reprint) by : Randolph Ll Hodgson
Excerpt from Wanderings Through Unknown Austria Of course, I never read them; personally, I think that reading and writing are decidedly a mistake; but if-i wanted to know anything about these coun tries there would not be the slightest necessity to travel about; other people have done that for me. To speak the truth, I do not want to know anything about foreign parts. One book of Stanley, for instance, is enough to make me hate the very idea of Inner Africa; and as to the North Pole, I cannot describe my feelings with regard to the raving lunatics who imagine they have anything to do there. I am all for a quiet life, you know. I stick to my principles - the summer in Cairo, the Winter in bed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis A Child of the Alps (Classic Reprint) by : Margaret Symonds
Excerpt from A Child of the Alps The little town of Ilanz has a long and an illustrious his tory. It stands with all its wooden towers and bridges on the banks of the Upper Rhine. It has fine houses, nobly planned and painted Old churches, too', and many treasured archives. It has valuable orchards where some Of the finest fruit of all the Alps is ripened, and where the sweetest honey is gathered by the bees. Also, like many other little hidden cities, Ilanz is pleased with her own life and doings; and her people are a proud people, well-informed, and given to foreign commerce. But the party of English travellers who, late one summer evening, came hurrying back across the Alps from Italy, and who found themselves stranded here, so much against their wills and calculations, knew nothing of all these matters. Synopsis Wanderings in Four Continents (Classic Reprint) by : UNKNOWN. AUTHOR
Excerpt from Wanderings in Four Continents If, led by inclination or compelled by necessity, you go into the street, you find the space between the sidewalks transformed into a miniature river. In some of the streets the pavements are more than three feet high, and pedes trians walk on them as on the tow-path of a canal, passing from one side of the torrent to the other on small wooden crossings. The comfort that is derived elsewhere in inclement weather from fires may not be hoped for in Buenos Ayres, for the bed-rooms are rarely pro vided with fireplaces. And in cases where they do possess them the chimneys are liable to smoke dreadfully when the north-west wind sweeps over the city. The natives, accustomed to these fea tures of the rainy season in La Plata, look with indifference on the forlorn condition of the stranger within their gates. And the foreigner, thus left to struggle against the coalition of the elements with the thoughtless or selfish indifference of the native population, must resign himself with patience and resignation until the three months of watery affliction shall have passed away.
