Between the years 1969 and 1971, he served for a short time as an MP (Military Policeman) before joining a combat engineer unit and then volunteering to be a door gunner on Huey helicopters. As a combat engineer with the 8th Engineer Bn, Les Dykema participated in the 'invasion' of Cambodia and as a member of 1st Team, Charlie Company (Ghostriders), 227th Air Assault Bn, 1st Cavalry, he took part in numerous operations in the notorious Triangle area.
