Synopsis Virtual Prototyping for Conceptual Design of Tracked Mobile Robots by : Sadath Malik
During the conceptual design stage of a tracked mobile robot, the designer wishes to verify the robot s mobility and manipulation capabilities. Multi-body dynamics simulation-based virtual prototyping process can be used in the conceptual design stage and can significantly reduce the amount of physical testing required at various design stages, and associated cost. The application of this process for tracked mobile robots has been developed and is shown here. As a test case, it was initially applied to an existing robot and was validated with test results. Later it was applied to a new robot while still in its conceptual design stage. Multi-body dynamic models of the robots were generated and simulations related to mobility and manipulation tasks were performed. The usefulness of the simulation results to verify and improve the robot design was demonstrated. The above established process can now be applied to new robot designs, during its conceptual design stage.

Synopsis Designs and Prototypes of Mobile Robots by : Marco Ceccarelli
For several decades now, mobile robots have been integral to the development of new robotic systems for new applications, even in nontechnical areas. Mobile robots have already been developed for such uses as industrial automation, medical care, space exploration, demining operations, surveillance, entertainment, museum guides and many other industrial and non-industrial applications. In some cases these products are readily available on the market. A considerable amount of literature is also available; not all of which pertains to technical issues, as listed in the chapters of this book and its companion. Readers will enjoy this book and its companion and will utilize the knowledge gained with satisfaction and will be assisted by its content in their interdisciplinary work for engineering developments of mobile robots, in both old and new applications. This book and its companion can be used as a graduate level course book or a guide book for the practicing engineer who is working on a specific problem which is described in one of the chapters. The companion volume for this book, Mobile Robots for Dynamic Environments, is also available from Momentum Press.

Synopsis Modeling and Control of a Tracked Mobile Robot for Pipeline Inspection by : Michał Ciszewski
This book describes the design, mathematical modeling, control system development and experimental validation of a versatile mobile pipe inspection robot. It also discusses a versatile robotic system for pipeline inspection, together with an original, adaptable tracked mobile robot featuring a patented motion unit. Pipeline inspection is a common field of application for mobile robots because the monitoring of inaccessible, long and narrow pipelines is a very difficult task for humans. The main design objective is to minimize the number of robots needed to inspect different types of horizontal and vertical pipelines, with both smooth and rough surfaces. The book includes extensive information on the various design phases, mathematical modeling, simulations and control system development. In closing, the prototype construction process and testing procedures are presented and supplemented with laboratory and field experiments.

Synopsis Intelligent Robotics and Applications by : Honghai Liu
The market demand for skills, knowledge and adaptability have positioned robotics to be an important field in both engineering and science. One of the most highly visible applications of robotics has been the robotic automation of many industrial tasks in factories. In the future, a new era will come in which we will see a greater success for robotics in non-industrial environments. In order to anticipate a wider deployment of intelligent and autonomous robots for tasks such as manufacturing, healthcare, ent- tainment, search and rescue, surveillance, exploration, and security missions, it is essential to push the frontier of robotics into a new dimension, one in which motion and intelligence play equally important roles. The 2010 International Conference on Intelligent Robotics and Applications (ICIRA 2010) was held in Shanghai, China, November 10–12, 2010. The theme of the c- ference was “Robotics Harmonizing Life,” a theme that reflects the ever-growing interest in research, development and applications in the dynamic and exciting areas of intelligent robotics. These volumes of Springer’s Lecture Notes in Artificial Intel- gence and Lecture Notes in Computer Science contain 140 high-quality papers, which were selected at least for the papers in general sessions, with a 62% acceptance rate Traditionally, ICIRA 2010 holds a series of plenary talks, and we were fortunate to have two such keynote speakers who shared their expertise with us in diverse topic areas spanning the rang of intelligent robotics and application activities.
