Synopsis Mad Blood Stirring by : Daemon Fairless
With a rare clarity and fearless honesty, journalist Daemon Fairless tackles the horrors and compulsions of male violence from the perspective of someone who struggles with violent impulses himself, creating a non-fiction masterpiece with the narrative power of novels such as Fight Club and A History of Violence. A man, no matter how civilized, is still an animal--and sometimes a dangerous one. Men are responsible for the lion's share of assault, rape, murder and warfare. Conventional wisdom chalks this up to socialization, that men are taught to be violent. And they are. But there's more to it. Violence is a dangerous desire--a set of powerful and inherent emotions we are loath to own up to. And so there remains a hidden geography to male violence--an inner ecosystem of rage, dominance, blood-lust, insecurity and bravado--yet to be mapped. Mad Blood Stirring is journalist Daemon Fairless's riveting first-person travelogue through this territory as he seeks to understand the inner lives of violent men and, ultimately, himself.

Synopsis Healing Violent Men by : David J. Livingston
Domestic violence is a widespread, though largely invisable, problem, often exacerbated by the pastoral urge to keep the family together at all costs. Yet if that is not a solution, how should the church relate to batterers?I believe that the Christian community, if it is to be genuinely a community of healing and hope, must attend to both the victims and the perpetrators of domestic violence, says David Livingston. Addressing the complex phenomenon of intimate violence against wives, lovers, and children, Livingston profiles batterers and battering and traces it to larger cultural pathologies. He explores the ambiguous role of religion and then offers practical advice for pastoral and programmatic efforts to embrace simultaneously the twin Christian imperatives of forgiveness and responsibility.

Synopsis Violent Manhood by : J. E. Sumerau
This book touches on all of the hot-topic issues of masculinity and violence, including gun violence, sexual assault and the #MeToo movement, violence against women, LGBTQ people, and people of color. Its unique approach will add to many conversations that should, as Sumerau explains, be focused on masculinity and are far too often focused on something else. Taking the approach of talking with young college men who are privileged provides a unique look at how manhood and masculinity may not be progressing like many people hope and provides insights from all angles to critically examine the ways men construct and explain relationships between violence, manhood, and inequality in society.

Synopsis Working with Violent Men by : William Hughes
Working with Violent Men gives a detailed insight into working with men who have been violent towards intimate partners. As such this monograph aims to contribute to a gap in knowledge and understanding within an important social and criminal justice topic. The book is underpinned by research based on participant observation at domestic abuse groups, allowing for direct observation of behaviours and interactions, including gestures and emotional responses, as well as semi-structured interviews with group facilitators and participants. It also draws on the author’s experience of working with domestically abusive men, as a probation officer and facilitator of domestic abuse programmes. He argues that groups involve a micro social order, involving rules and rituals. These are continuously constructed and negotiated by participants, against a backdrop of ideas about masculinity, and involve the performance of gendered roles. Understanding the perspectives of these men, as well the interactional rules, rituals, and dynamics of programmes, enables facilitators to navigate the hostility that men display and engage them in a process of change. Attention to these considerations has implications for the effectiveness of group-based interventions in reducing violence against intimate partners and the training of those who deliver programmes. More general extrapolations are also drawn, about contemporary understandings of gender, masculinity, identity, and effective communication within groups. This book will be of value to undergraduate and postgraduate students with interests in domestic violence, gender, probation, and the rituals of social interactions. It will also be useful to academics, researchers, and policymakers wishing to explore and develop approaches to work with domestically violent men.

Synopsis Changing Violent Men by : R. Emerson Dobash
Changing Violent Men is based on the evaluation of British criminal justice responses and treatment programs for men who use violence against a woman partner. Court enforced abuser programs are compared with more traditional sanctions such as fines and probation. And qualitative and quantitative data are used to delineate patterns of personal change. This book allows the men and women involved to speak about their lives and the impact of criminal justice interventions upon them.

Synopsis The Rehabilitation of Partner-Violent Men by : Erica Bowen
THE REHABILITATION OF PARTNER-VIOLENT MEN “Informed by theory and evidence, this text offers a full account of a pressing social problem.” Professor Clive Hollin, School of Psychology, The University of Leicester, UK “This is a book which clearly sets out the history, theoretical developments, interventions and possibilities for the future within a UK context. It is an excellent source of good information about where we are and an excellent springboard for future developments in both research and practice.” Professor Liz Gilchrist, Department of Psychology, Glasgow Caledonian University, UK “Erica Bowen’s book The Rehabilitation of Partner-Violent Men is a timely and important contribution to the literature of effective interventions. The content would be of interest to students, researchers and practitioners” Dr. Nicola Graham-Kevan, School of Psychology, University of Central Lancashire, UK Violence within intimate relationships is not just a modern occurrence; yet, while the nature of the abuse has changed little over hundreds of years, great strides have been made in dealing with male perpetrators of domestic violence in the UK. The Rehabilitation of Partner-Violent Men presents an historical account of the policy changes that have led to the provision of rehabilitation programmes for male perpetrators of intimate partner violence within the British criminal justice system. Drawing on both national and international literature, the book provides an overview of the theoretical foundation behind current approaches to rehabilitation, as well as a critical examination of evaluation methodology and an appraisal of the effectiveness of current practices. While probing deeply into the nature of intimate partner-violence, The Rehabilitation of Partner-Violent Men offers rich and revealing insights into the efficacy of intervention programmes, and their profound influences on the lives of millions of women around the world each year.
