Synopsis Unfastened by : Eleanor Rose Ty

Unfastenedexamines literary works and films by Asian Americans and Asian Canadians that respond critically to globality—the condition in which traditional national, cultural, geographical, and economic boundaries have been—supposedly—surmounted. In this wide-ranging exploration, Eleanor Ty reveals how novelists such as Brian Ascalon Roley, Han Ong, Lydia Kwa, and Nora Okja Keller interrogate the theoretical freedom that globalization promises in their depiction of the underworld of crime and prostitution. She looks at the social critiques created by playwrights Betty Quan and Sunil Kuruvilla, who use figures of disability to accentuate the effects of marginality. Investigating works based on fantasy, Ty highlights the ways feminist writers Larissa Lai, Chitra Divakaruni, Hiromi Goto, and Ruth Ozeki employ myth, science fiction, and magic realism to provide alternatives to global capitalism. She notes that others, such as filmmaker Deepa Mehta and performers/dramatists Nadine Villasin and Nina Aquino, play with the multiple identities afforded to them by transcultural connections. Ultimately, Ty sees in these diverse narratives unfastened mobile subjects, heroes, and travelers who use everyday tactics to challenge inequitable circumstances in their lives brought about by globalization.

Synopsis Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures 2019 by : František Wald

For more than forty years the series of International Colloquia on Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures has been supported by the Structural Stability Research Council (SSRC). Its objective is to present the latest results in theoretical, numerical and experimental research in the area of stability and ductility of steel and steel-concrete composite structures. In Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures 2019, the focus is on new concepts and procedures concerning the analysis and design of steel structures and on the background, development and application of rules and recommendations either appearing in recently published Codes or Specifications and in emerging versions, all in anticipation of the new edition of Eurocodes. The series of International Colloquia on Stability and Ductility of Steel Structures started in Paris in 1972, the last five being held in: Timisoara, Romania (1999), Budapest, Hungary (2002), Lisbon, Portugal (2006), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2010) and Timisoara, Romania (2016). The 2019 edition of SDSS is organized by the Czech Technical University in Prague.

Synopsis Physics by : Jim Breithaupt

Assuming no prior knowledge, this established textbook provides a complete course in physics for beginners and includes coverage on seven core areas of physics, including mechanics, materials, waves and electricity. Readers will develop a solid understanding of topics such as fields, electromagnetism, electronics, atomic and nuclear physics and thermodynamics, and are encouraged to engage with the text through exercises and revision questions. Illustrations are used extensively to complement theoretical explanations and help readers understand the fundamentals of physics. This book is aimed at students on access or foundation programmes in physics, but is also ideal for non-specialist students on degree courses such as biological sciences, chemical sciences, engineering, mathematics and geology, for whom physics is a subsidiary subject. It is also suitable for trainee science teachers and medical students who need to develop a solid background in physics. New to this Edition: - Brand-new unit on Rotational Dynamics - Attractive new layout and design, with more illustrations and use of colour - Expanded companion website with case studies on applications of physics, resources to develop essential mathematical skills, practical experiments and much more
