Synopsis Unexpected Findings by : Michelle Mach

Give new life to your jewelry designs by using common jewelry findings in surprising ways. Readers will enjoy this book as it takes a completely new approach to working with jewelry findings by focusing on nontraditional uses for them: bead frames become connectors; toggle clasps become pendants; filigree can be rolled to create tube beads or bails; and so much more. Author Michelle Mach offers a thorough overview of the many different jewelry findings available, essential tools, and other materials, such as beads, wire, and cords and ribbons. Tips for modifying purchased findings with patinas, beads, hammering, painting, and other jewelry making techniques are also provided. Fifty jewelry projects showcase one or more findings used in a new or unusual way. The designs include necklaces, bracelets, and earrings, some of which can be taken apart and reassembled to become different pieces of jewelry. Basic jewelry making techniques, such as stringing, simple wirework, and basic metalwork, are also covered along with a thorough list of resources.

Synopsis Colorectal Surgery Consultation by : Sang W. Lee

This book provides clear surgical options when the cases are not “routine”. It follows both a “how to” manual as well as an algorithm-based guide to allow the reader to understand the thought process behind the proposed treatment strategy. In each chapter, international experts address how to avoid being in tough surgical situations through preoperative planning, how to better deal with commonly encountered intra-operative findings, how to deal with difficult laparoscopic, open, endoscopic, and anorectal cases, and how to avoid medico-legal issues. Colorectal Surgery Consultation is simple and succinct and provides pragmatic advice and reproducible techniques that can be readily implemented by surgeons of varying experience to successfully treat complex colorectal problems through endoscopic and endoluminal approaches that may make the difference in patient outcomes.

Synopsis How Scientists Reason by : Lisa M. Baker

"While there is much data in the experimental cognitive psychology literature reporting that subjects working on science-like tasks ignore findings inconsistent with their hypotheses, much cognitive science research has found that reasoners focus on unexpected findings. To study how real-world scientists deal with unexpected findings, data was collected from a prominent immunology laboratory. Four lab meetings were analyzed using a standardized coding procedure. The amount of reasoning, interactions, and new hypotheses about unexpected versus expected findings was analyzed. Presenters at the meetings reasoned more about unexpected than expected findings, and group members reasoned and interacted extensively about unexpected findings. Both presenter and group members formed more new hypotheses about unexpected than about expected findings. These results are consistent with the finding in cognitive science research that reasoners focus on unexpected data. It is proposed that several heuristics influence which unexpected findings scientists pay attention to." --

Synopsis Eightysomethings by : Katharine Esty

This invaluable guide will help the historical number of eightysomethings live fulfilled, happy lives long into their twilight years. Old age is not what it used to be. For the first time ever, most people in the United States are living into their eighties. The first guide of its kind, Eightysomethings changes our understanding of old age with an upbeat and emotionally savvy view of the uncharted territory of the last stage of life. With insight and humor, Dr. Katharine Esty describes the series of dramatic and difficult transitions that eightysomethings usually experience and how, despite their losses, they so often find themselves unexpectedly happy. Living into one’s eighties doesn’t have to mean declining health and loneliness: Dr. Esty shows readers how to embrace—and thrive during—the later stages of life. Based on her more than 120 interviews around the country, Esty explores the lives of ordinary eightysomethings—their attitudes, activities, secrets, worries, purposes, and joys. Their stories illustrate how real people in their eighties are living and how they make sense of their lives. Esty adds her wisdom and perspective to this multi-dimensional look at being old as a social psychologist, a practicing psychotherapist, and as an eighty-four-year-old widow living in a retirement community. Eightysomethings is a must-read for people in their eighties, and also for their families. Adult children—often bewildered by their aging parents—need a wise guide like Eightysomethings to help them navigate their parents’ last stage of life with real-world guidelines and conversation starters. Readers, young and old alike, will find this first-of-its-kind book eye-opening, comforting, and filled with practical tips.

Synopsis Anticipate and Communicate by : Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues

Anticipate and Communicate is the Bioethics Commission's sixth major report. In this report the Bioethics Commission offers specific recommendations for the management of incidental and secondary findings in clinical, research and direct-to-consumer settings. Emerging medical technologies, changing cost structures, and evolving medical practice make the likelihood of discovering incidental and secondary findings across contexts a growing certainty. Such findings can be lifesaving, but also can lead to uncertainty and distress if they are unexpected or identify conditions for which no effective treatment is available.
