Synopsis Post-Acute and Long-Term Medicine by : Pamela A. Fenstemacher

This book addresses current issues surrounding hospital readmissions and the practice of post-acute and long-term care (LTC). Thoroughly updated, the Second Edition of this practical pocket guide presents new regulations governing these services and lessens the uncertainty involved in caring for patients in a long-term care facility. The book is divided into four sections that cover: types of care, which include community care, nursing facility care, and teamwork; clinical medicine, with suggested approaches to common conditions and wound care; psychosocial aspects of care, which include ethical and legal issues and caring for families; and special issues, with chapters on documentation, coding, and medication management. As community-based care is an area of rapid growth where the elderly are increasingly seeking their medical care, new chapters have also been added that describe these programs. Written by expert contributors, many of whom have worked within the American Medical Directors Association to create and disseminate a knowledge base for post-acute and LTC, this is a valuable resource for clinicians and educators seeking to maximize the care and living experience of residents in post-acute and long-term care settings.

Synopsis Long-Term Care and Medicare Policy by : David Blumenthal

As the population ages, policymakers must evaluate the nation's readiness to assist a growing group of people with conditions requiring chronic and long-term care. Based on the 2002 annual meeting of the National Academy of Social Insurance, this new volume offers a variety of viewpoints from policymakers, researchers, and experts who examine how well the needs of the elderly and disabled Americans are being met by today's financing and delivery systems, in light of potential reform options. Particular attention is paid to care coordination issues—namely, the impact of acute-care policies on long-term and chronic care—to draw attention to how the segmentation of healthcare provision can create disruptions in patient care. Authors address the advantages and disadvantages of varying levels of state, federal, and private involvement in long-term care. Clearly, for people to access appropriate long-term care today and tomorrow, a careful balance of financing sources and integrated health care must be achieved. Researchers, analysts, and policymakers, therefore, will find this volume useful to informing thoughtful analysis of important long-term care issues.

Synopsis Long-term Care by : United States. General Accounting Office

Today, an increasing number of Americans need long-term care. Unprecedented growth in the elderly population is projected for the 21st century, and the population age 85 and older--those most in need of long-term care--is expected to outpace the rate of growth for the entire elderly population. In addition to the dramatic rise in the elderly population, a large portion of the long-term care population consists of younger people with disabilities. The importance of long-term care was underscored by the 1994 congressional debate over health care reform and, more recently, by the "Contract with America," which proposed assistance such as tax deductions for long-term-care insurance and tax credits for family caregiving. This report (1) defines what is meant by "long-term care" and discusses the conditions that give rise to long-term care need, how such need is measured, and which groups--young and old--require long-term care; (2) examines the long-term care costs that are borne by federal and state governments as well as by families; (3) addresses strategies that states and foreign countries are pursuing to contain public long-term-care costs; and (4) discusses predictions by experts on the future demand for long-term care.
