This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Unconventional Computation, UC 2005, held in Sevilla, Spain in September 2005. The conference formerly was named Unconventional Models of Computation (UMC). The 19 revised full papers presented together with 5 invited full papers were carefully reviewed and selected for inclusion in the book. All major areas of unconventional computing models are covered in theory as well as in experiments and applications. Topics addressed are: natural computing including quantum, cellular, molecular, neural and evolutionary computing; chaos and dynamical systems based computing; and various proposals for computations that go beyond the Turing model.

This book, The Science and Technology of Unconventional Oils: Finding Refining Opportunities, intends to report the collective physical and chemical knowledge of unconventional oils (heavy, extra-heavy, sour/acid, and shale oil) and the issues associated with their refining for the production of transportation fuels. It will focus on the discussion of the scientific results and technology activities of the refining of unconventional oils. The presence of reactive and refractory compounds and components that negatively impact refining processing (the "bad actors") are discussed and analyzed. The commercially available technologies, with their reported improvements and emerging ideas, concepts, and technologies, are described. This comprehensive overview constitutes the basis for establishing technology gaps, and in return sets the science and technology needs to be addressed in the future. The papers in this volume were presented at the Second International Conference on Unconventional Photoactive Solids held at the R&D Center of BP America September 9-12, 1985. It was part of an on-going series of conferences with the main aim of stressing the Interrelationship of solid state physics and solid state chemistry. The choice of topics covered a broad range of light-Induced solid state phenomena with particular emphasis on novel materials and/or novel phenomena. Organic solids, in particular, were emphasized as they are a natural meeting point of solid state physics and chemistry. A general trend In solid state physics Is to more complex materials (e.g. nonequilibrium glassy films, complicated unit cells, extended molecular building blocks, etc.). This trend necessitates the closer interaction between physicists and chemists. This conference reflects this trend quite dramatically. It is a new grouping together of a mix of materials, people and experimental approaches. A typical new theme pulling together this new mix can be seen in Part I. Fractals in Disordered Media. A variety of disordered media give rise to unusual temporal patterns of diffusion and reactions. The more familiar spatial patterns of self-similarity are discussed in the first article by M.F. Barnsley. Another topic pulling together a diverse group of scientists is covered in Part II. Spectral Hole-Burning. A number of leaders in this field are represented In these three papers.

Myosins, actin-dependent molecular motors, are best known for their involvement in muscle contraction. However, besides classical (conventional) myosins, there is a vast number of other myosin motors that structurally and functionally do not resemble muscle myosins and therefore are termed as unconventional myosins. Since discovery in 1973 of the first unconventional myosin, myosin I, in Acanthamoeba castellanii by Thomas D. Pollard and Edward D. Korn, it has been shown that unconventional myosins form a large family, members of which are involved in a plethora of cellular functions, including those associated with intracellular trafficking and cell migration. However, despite the intensive research still many questions persist about their specific role(s) in these processes.
