Synopsis Types of Competitiveness of Hungarian Regions by : Imre Lengyel

Nowadays, more and more scholars of regional science are interested in the role of agglomeration economies in the knowledge-based economy. This issue can be dealt with from different points of view: the competitive type of functional or nodal regions and one has to examine the factors influencing regional competitiveness. To improve competitiveness of regions, different economic development programmes must be applied, which means that the improvement of competitiveness requires different strategies based on the different types of regions. In this paper we outline our analytical framework: the pyramid model of regional competitiveness and the UFO-model of cluster-based regional economic development. After introducing, we are going to investigate into the competitiveness of Hungarian microregions (LAU1). Our statistical analysis to underline the classification of microregions by competitiveness types is based on a complex methodology of multi-variable data analysis. For the investigation of agglomeration economies in these different types of microregions we apply the location quotient (LQ) method and Ellison-Glaeser-index of traded sectors. The Local Moran Index (LISA), which can be interpreted as the local index of spatial autocorrelation, is used to calculate the neighbourhood effects of the microregions.

Synopsis The Role of Clusters in the Development of Hungarian City-regions by : Imre Lengyel

More and more scholars of regional science are interested nowadays in the question what role do clusters in city-regions play in the knowledge-based economy. This question can be dealt with from the functional or nodal regions point of view and one has to examine the factors that influence regional competitiveness. The answers are especially important for the Hungarian city-regions, since between 2007 and 2013 they are aimed with significant subsidies from EU regional development funds to improve their competitiveness. In this paper we outline our analytical framework: the pyramid model of regional competitiveness. After this the paper assesses the competitiveness types of the Hungarian functional subregions, as city-regions (LAU1). A complex methodology, with the help of multi-variable data analysing methods, is used throughout our statistical analysis to underlie the classification of city-regions. For the clusters mapping in these regions we apply the location quotient (LQ) method.

Synopsis Measuring Innovation Performance and Competitiveness in the Hungarian Micro-regions by : Miklós Lukovics

Besides globalization, or rather, parallel with it, knowledge-based economy seems to represent a highly important ground-gaining force - quasi becoming a trendy buzzword - that attracts increasing attention in developed countries, although its forms vary in different regions owing to the differing situation and set of conditions of the given area and the new type of international specialization emerging as a result of global competition. All this is a fundamental factor at the level of sub-regions, since competitiveness is determined by knowledge base on the local level. The present paper aims to develop an indicator system and a complex method to measure the connection between the innovation performance and competitiveness of local units. We try to demonstrate the determining role of the innovation performance on the regional disparities measured by the competitiveness on sub-regional level with the help of multi-variable data analyzing methods based on a determined system of viewpoints, a correctly chosen theoretical models and statistical data. In the course of our work, using cluster analysis, MDS, factor analysis etc. the 174 Hungarian sub-regions will be classified according to their development phases.

Synopsis Handbook of Regions and Competitiveness by : Robert Huggins

The aim of this Handbook is to take stock of regional competitiveness and complementary concepts as a means of presenting a state-of-the-art discussion of the contemporary theories, perspectives and empirical explanations that help make sense of the determinants of uneven development across regions. Drawing on an international field of leading scholars, the book is assembled and organized so that readers can first learn about the theoretical underpinnings of regional competitiveness and development theory, before moving on to deeper discussions of key factors and principal elements, the emergence of allied concepts, empirical applications, and the policy context.

Synopsis Geo-Regional Competitiveness in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic Countries, and Russia by : Zhuplev, Anatoly

The changing dynamics in the European region and beyond, the unfolding political-economic challenges across the European Union, and the rising global power of emerging economic powers require knowledge, skills, and methodological platforms inducing strategies and operations in the new and ever-changing business landscape. Geo-Regional Competitiveness in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic Countries, and Russia seeks to address East Central Europe’s (ECE), the Baltics’, and Russia’s increasingly important roles as emerging markets and competitive economic players in the European region. This premier reference work is designated for scholars, professionals, government agencies, think tanks, and other individuals, organizations, and institutions interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the geo-regional strategic business dynamics and landscape involving ECE, the Baltics, and Russia.
