This book is a historical study of the development of agrarian-class relations among the tribal population in Tripura. Tracing the evolution of Tripura and its agrarian relations from monarchy in the nineteenth century to democracy in the twentieth century, the book discusses the nature of the erstwhile princely state of Tripura, analyses the emergence of differentiation within tribes, and documents the emergence of the tribal movement in the state. It specifically focuses on the tribal movement led by the Ganamukti Parishad, beginning with the historic revolt of 1948-51 against state repression on the tribal people, followed by the mass movements in the 1950s and 1960s, which were founded on a recognition of class relations and the slogan of unity across the tribal and non-tribal (Bengali) peasantry. The first of its kind, the book will be indispensable for students and researchers of tribal studies, agrarian studies, exclusion studies, tribe-class relationships, minority studies, sociology, development studies, history, political science, northeast India studies, and South Asian studies. Uranium industry occupies a very important place in the socio-economic sphere of East Singhbhum District of Jharkhand ever since its inception in 1967 it has played an important role in influencing health, education, crime, employment, income, migration & displacement and environment of the people of surrounding area. The industry has situated at Jaduguda, which falls under Mushabani and Potka Block of East Singhbhum District of Jharkhand. The socio-economic life of the people residing in and around this area has influenced by this in Jaduguda. The findings are based on a comparison of data on variables like health, education, crime, employment, income, migration & displacement and environment prior to inception of the mines and the situation at present time. It has observed that there has been positive impact on education employment and income. However, the study also observed there are certain negative linkages also. The important one is being deterioration of the health of the people, environmental degradation, and increasing rate of crime, migration & displacement. This study provides a means of identifying and tracking indicators associated with community vitality in Jaduguda communities that relate to the uranium mining industry including approaches that assess community health (physical, mental/emotional, spiritual/cultural, and social), community quality of life, community sustainable development, and community wellness as such, it has undertaken a broad array of studies since its inception, guided by input from community members from Jaduguda. As such, the purpose of the study is to identify the socio-economic linkages both beneficial and otherwise that the modern uranium mining industry has had on Jaduguda, and its residents and communities.

Gulf societies are often described as being intensely tribal. However, in discussions of state building and national identity, the role of tribalism and tribal identity is often overlooked. This book analyses the political role of tribes in Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE aiming to understand the degree to which tribes hinder or advance popular participation in government and to what extent they exert domestic political power. The research traces the historical relationship between ruling elites and nomadic tribes, and, by constructing political histories of these states and analysing the role of tribes in domestic political life and social hierarchies, reveals how they serve as major political actors in the Gulf.
