Synopsis Towering by : Alex Flinn

New York Times #1 bestselling author Alex Flinn reimagined the fairy tale Beauty and the Beast in Beastly and gave a twist to the story of Sleeping Beauty in A Kiss in Time. Now with her gothic and darkly romantic YA novel Towering, Alex Flinn retells the tale of Rapunzel. When Rachel was taken to live in a tower by a woman she calls Mama, she was excited. She felt like a princess in a castle. But many years later, Rachel knows her palace is really a prison, and begins to plan her escape. She is encouraged by the speed with which her golden hair has been growing. It's gotten long enough to reach the ground. And she's begun dreaming of a green-eyed man. Could he be out there in the world? Is he coming to save her? Or will she find a way to save herself?

Synopsis Towering Figures by : Sven Cvek

This volume offers a critical analysis of a segment of American literary production surrounding the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States. While focusing on the writing of Jonathan Safran Foer, Art Spiegelman, Don DeLillo, and Thomas Pynchon, the author locates this work within a larger 9/11 cultural archive. The book proceeds by way of a series of thematic leaps in order to unearth the active entanglement of the event with systems of meaning and power that create the conditions for its emergence and understanding. The main problem of such an approach consists in articulating the three-fold relation at the heart of the archive in which issues of traumatic loss, affect, and politics appear as central: between the historical event, its cultural imprint, and the wider social system. In order to grasp these fundamental relations, the author resorts to a layered interpretive framework and engages a number of theoretical protocols, from psychoanalysis and nationalism studies to philosophy of history, world-system theory, and the heterogeneous critical practices of American Studies. Coming from a non-US Americanist perspective, this contribution to the scholarly production about 9/11 concentrates on trauma as a problem in the conceptualization the event, insists on globalization as its crucial context, and argues for a historical materialist approach to the 9/11 archive.

Synopsis Towering Mirrors, Mirroring Towers by : David Weinberg

"In this [...] collection of original photography, David Weinberg captures the creations of some of America's celebrated architects like Helmut Jahn and Tom Beeby as well as the work of illustrious firms like Holabird & Roche and Kohn Pederson Fox. Weinberg reveals how intriguing their towers of glass and steel truly are.The buildings featured here are reflective of our society; their modern design represent the accelerated pace of civilization while their glass facades act as literal mirrors, reflecting the scenes of urban life in a dazzling display of color and movement. Weinberg takes us from the magnificent structures of Chicago to the creative designs of Dallas, Texas, and then further east to make the most of the extreme light in Sarasota, Florida. But Towering Mirrors, Mirroring Towers is [...also] an innovative study in visual abstraction. Weinberg captures familiar skyscrapers in surprising ways, so that many of these photographs-shots of mercurial colors and shapes, reflected and warped into shimmering patterns of light-are no longer recognizable as building.
