This book contains the revised selected, refereed papers from the IFIP World Conference on Computers in Education on Towards a Collaborative Society through Creative Learning, WCCE 2022, Hiroshima, Japan, August 20-24, 2022. A total of 61 papers (54 full papers and 7 short papers) were carefully reviewed and selected from 131 submissions. They were organized in topical sections as follows: ​ Digital Education and Computing in Schools, Digital Education and Computing in Higher Education, National Policies and Plans for Digital Competence.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Informatics in Schools: Situation, Evolution and Perspectives, ISSEP 2023, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, during October 23–25, 2023. The 14 full papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 47 submissions. It is a common ambition in society and government to make young people more creative. These aspirations are motivated by two key concerns: to make experience at school more exciting, relevant, challenging and dynamic; and to ensure that young people are able and fit to leave education and contribute to the creative economy that will underpin growth in the twenty-first century. Transforming these common aspirations into informed practice is not easy. It can mean making many changes: turning classrooms into more exciting experiences; introducing more thoughtful challenges into the curriculum; making teachers into different kinds of instructors; finding more authentic assessment processes; putting young people’s voices at the heart of learning. There are programmes, projects and initiatives that have consistently attempted to offer such change and transformation. The UK programme Creative Partnerships is the largest of these, but there are significant initiatives in many other parts of the world today, including France, Norway, Canada and the United States. This book not only draws on this body of expertise but also consolidates it, making it the first methodological text exploring creativity. Creative teaching and learning is often used as a site for research and action research, and this volume is intended to act as a textbook for this range of courses and initiatives. The book will be a key text for research in creative teaching and learning and is specifically directed at ITE, CPD, Masters and doctoral students.

The concept of creative learning extends far beyond Arts-based learning or the development of individual creativity. It covers a range of processes and initiatives throughout the world that share common values, systems and practices aimed at making learning more creative. This applies at individual, classroom, or whole school level, always with the aim of fully realising young people’s potential. Until now there has been no single text bringing together the significant literature that explores the dimensions of creative learning, despite the work of artists in schools and the development of a cadre of creative teaching and learning specialists. Containing a mixture of newly commissioned chapters, reprints and updated versions of previous publications, this book brings together major theorists and current research. Comprising of key readings in creative education, it will stand as a uniquely authoritative text that will appeal to those involved in initial and continuing teacher education, as well as research academics and policy specialists. ACE (Active Collaborative Education) set out on its educational journey in October 2001. At the time, graduates of the college were enthusiastically accepted in the field, smoothly slipping into the school system and highly appreciated as ‘good teachers’. However, this situation did not please this book’s contributors. They wanted to see ACE graduates as different teachers, agents of change and innovation in their classrooms as well as in the wider circles of their society. It is against this background that the ACE program came into being – subversive in spirit, focusing on the process as much as on its end results, on dialogue instead of on competition, and on learning communities and participation as much as on individual engagement.

Creativity is an inherent part of human development, it is the progress of thought; our natural inclination to innovate, invent, and create. Simply put, we have the ability to process, analyze and imagine future outcomes of everyday situations. Evidence suggests that creative education can support cognitive development and enhance our ability to problem solve. In the past decade, curriculum reform in Kenya has shifted from teacher-based approaches to learner-centered approaches (with the introduction of Competency-Based Curriculum). While this may support the next generation of creative thinkers, the lack of funding to support creative education on a national level and the insufficient supply of free resources to most public schools pose a challenge to educators. Despite the appeal of the new curriculum, requirements for parents to be more involved in their children's learning further pronounce wealth and education gaps amongst students, further impeding the child's success. This design thesis presents the iterative process behind the ongoing development process of Somoto, a creative learning service established through the DesignX accelerator at MIT. Through community collaboration, Somoto aims to establish a network of creative learning spaces in Nairobi, Kenya. Drawing from a place-based community development approach; the design proposal identifies community assets and existing resources such as community libraries and cyber cafes to enhance creative education programming within low-income communities in Nairobi.
