Synopsis Tough Guys and True Believers by : John M. Robertson

Some men are especially difficult to manage in the psychotherapy room. They are controlling, exploitive, rigid, aggressive, and prejudiced. In a word, they are Authoritarian. This book is a guide for therapists and counselors who work with these men, offering an understanding of their psychological development and providing empirically supported recommendations to work with them effectively. In the first part, Robertson describes several versions of authoritarian men. Some are Tough Guys (workplace bullies, abusive partners, sexual harassers), and others are True Believers (men who use religion to justify their authoritarian behavior). Robertson draws from a diverse literature in psychology, sociology, men’s studies, and neurobiology to describe the developmental histories and personalities of these men. Part two offers practical and specific strategies to assess and treat these wounded men—developing a masculine friendly alliance, respecting their personal and religious beliefs, and teaching them self-awareness and self-regulation skills. Throughout, Robertson emphasizes a reality that many therapists doubt: Some authoritarian men want to change their behavior, and are capable of doing so. This book presents an empathic and respectful view of a group of men too often written off as unmanageable and unchangeable.

Synopsis Where the Millennials Will Take Us by : Barbara J. Risman

Are today's young adults gender rebels or returning to tradition? In Where the Millennials Will Take Us, Barbara J. Risman reveals the diverse strategies youth use to negotiate the ongoing gender revolution. Using her theory of gender as a social structure, Risman analyzes life history interviews with a diverse set of Millennials to probe how they understand gender and how they might change it. Some are true believers that men and women are essentially different and should be so. Others are innovators, defying stereotypes and rejecting sexist ideologies and organizational practices. Perhaps new to this generation are gender rebels who reject sex categories, often refusing to present their bodies within them and sometimes claiming genderqueer identities. And finally, many youths today are simply confused by all the changes swirling around them. As a new generation contends with unsettled gender norms and expectations, Risman reminds us that gender is much more than an identity; it also shapes expectations in everyday life, and structures the organization of workplaces, politics, and, ideology. To pursue change only in individual lives, Risman argues, risks the opportunity to eradicate both gender inequality and gender as a primary category that organizes social life.

Synopsis Tough Guys of the Bible by : Paul Horrocks

TRUE COURAGE IS FEARING GOD NOT MEN Throughout history, when nations have turned from God, He has raised up men to try to bring them back. The prophets, the apostles, Jesus, and even more recent Christians have all performed this role. Tough Guys of the Bible profiles men such as these. You will learn four common characteristics of courageous men so you can incorporate those virtues into your life. If you're already a Christian, the lives of the Tough Guys will challenge you to live boldly for Jesus even when it requires great risk and sacrifice. If you're not a Christian, don't reject Jesus because of weak men inside the church. Explore the claims of the Bible through the lives of men who followed God the most, not those who followed Him the least. Evaluate the courageous life of Jesus. We hope you choose to join the Tough Guys in following Him as well. "The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. Synopsis True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee by : Abraham Riesman

The definitive, revelatory biography of Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee, a writer and entrepreneur who reshaped global pop culture—at a steep personal cost HUGO AWARD FINALIST • “A biography that reads like a thriller or a whodunit . . . scrupulously honest, deeply damning, and sometimes even heartbreaking.”—Neil Gaiman Stan Lee was one of the most famous and beloved entertainers to emerge from the twentieth century. He served as head editor of Marvel Comics for three decades and, in that time, became known as the creator of more pieces of internationally recognizable intellectual property than nearly anyone: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men, Black Panther, the Incredible Hulk . . . the list goes on. His carnival-barker marketing prowess helped save the comic-book industry and superhero fiction. His cameos in Marvel movies have charmed billions. When he died in 2018, grief poured in from around the world, further cementing his legacy. But what if Stan Lee wasn’t who he said he was? To craft the definitive biography of Lee, Abraham Riesman conducted more than 150 interviews and investigated thousands of pages of private documents, turning up never-before-published revelations about Lee’s life and work. True Believer tackles tough questions: Did Lee actually create the characters he gained fame for creating? Was he complicit in millions of dollars’ worth of fraud in his post-Marvel life? Which members of the cavalcade of grifters who surrounded him were most responsible for the misery of his final days? And, above all, what drove this man to achieve so much yet always boast of more?

Synopsis The True Believers by : Louis Martin

The critically acclaimed true story about the human cost of hero worship in martial arts. Featured on numerous shows and podcasts, The True Believers struck a chord with both traditional and modern martial artists across the world when it was first published in 2017. Now, in this special second edition, readers can go further down the rabbit hole in this true story about rampant fanaticism taking over a worldwide martial arts organization, and the chaos that it sowed in the lives of its True Believers. True Believers is the story of how a small, California marital arts school grew into a new age religion. Promoting black belts in mere months to maintain an army of fanatical young converts, while creating a business of endless monetization, trapping the most dedicated students in a spiral of financial ruin. Follow the rise and fall through the eyes of a young student on a seven year journey, attaining one of the highest ranks in the system, while secretly doubting his own abilities and fearing that his dojo has become a cult. Along the way, he discovers the truth about the business of selling fantasy and creating a codependent community that is fearful of the outside world and increasingly reliant on their master for direction. The True Believers is about the darker side of martial arts that robs real people of years of training and tens of thousands of dollars. But it's ultimately a story of triumph, as a group of senior students take a stand against wrongdoing and cripple an organization, their senior students resigning in protest.
