Synopsis One Hundred Buddhas by : Satyapal Anand

Culled from Buddhas own sermons, rare books, and manuscripts describing his life and times, this compendium of poetic monologues and dialogues is probably the only one in English that presents salient features of Buddhism of various shades. Satyapal Anand claims to be of the progeny of Anand, the senior most disciple and confidante of Buddha. Poetry and religion mix wonderfully, and Anands poems touch subjects such as ahimsa (nonviolence), sex, meat eating and self-defense. Some of the conventional view have been challenged and laid bare by Buddhas own words. Anands claim to authenticity is his poetic truth that he considers more reliable than mere books. These poems were first published in Urdu and were hailed as the first ever endeavor to present Buddhas teaching through the modern poetic idiom. To render topics like sex desire in young monks and meat eating if it was given as bhiksha (alms) were indeed controversial, but more so were Buddhas own lapses. Does he still feel lust for the other sex? asks Anand, and he replies in affirmative. Doesnt he have a guilty conscience in abandoning his wife and child? asks Anand, and Buddhas answer is still aye, but he defends it too. Is he going to get nirvana (freedom from the birth cycle) after this life? His answer is in the negative. He visualizes that he would be born as Jesus in his next birth and get nirvana only after he is crucified. So are some of his answers on the existence of God, hell or heaven, and whether or not this earth itself is either of these two. Having taught English and comparative literature in universities in India, England, Canada, and USA, Satyapal Anand now lives a secluded life in a suburb of Washington, DC.

Synopsis Nietzsche's Epic of the Soul by : T. K. Seung

Thus Spoke Zarathustra is Nietzsche's most problematic text. There appears to be no thematic connection between its four Parts and numerous sections. To make it even worse, the book contains a number of thematic contradictions. The standard approach has been a method of selective reading, that is, most critics select a few brilliant passages for edification and ignore the rest. This approach has turned Nietzsche's text into a collection of disjointed fragments. Going against this prevalent approach, T.K. Seung presents the first unified reading of the whole book. He reads it as the record of Zarathustra's epic journey to find spiritual values in the secular world. The alleged thematic contradictions of the text are shown to indicate the turns and twists that are dictated by the hero's epic battle against his formidable opponent. His heroic struggle is eventually resolved by the power of a pantheistic nature-religion. Thus Nietzsche's ostensibly atheistic work turns out to be a highly religious text. The author uncovers this epic plot by reading Nietzsche's text as a baffling series of riddles and puzzles. Hence his reading is not only edifying but also breathtaking. In this unprecedented enterprise, the author takes a complex interdisciplinary approach, engaging the five disciplines of philosophy, psychology, religious studies, literary analysis, and cultural history.

Synopsis Buddha Takes the Mound by : Donald S. Lopez, Jr., Ph.D.

In 2010 a Buddhist scroll was found in the ruins of Yankee stadium, and it proved what Buddhist scholar/award-winning author Donald Lopez, Ph.D., had suspected: the Buddha created the game of baseball. Buddha Takes the Mound: Enlightenment in 9 Innings is The Tao of Pooh for baseball. Funny, moving, and enlightening, this is a read that will engross, enrich, and charm any baseball fan. At once a love letter to the sport and an engaging introduction to Buddhism, it shows how the Buddha invented baseball to teach us deep truths about the world, about ourselves, and about each other. Lopez believes that Buddhism provides a lens for us to see baseball in a new way, a way that makes us love the game even more, a way that makes us ponder profound questions about winning and losing, about who we are, about finitude and infinitude, about birth and death. As Lopez reveals, not only is Buddhism integral to baseball; but baseball is Buddhism, and baseball is ourselves.

Synopsis Dialogues of the Buddha by : Thomas William Rhys Davids

The Digha Nikaya or the collection of long doctrinary lectures of the Buddha is one of the five Nikayas or collections belonging to the Suttapitaka or the basket of (Buddha`s) discourses which is one of the three majorr collections of Pali Buddhist texts, the other two being Vinayapitaka and Abhidhammapitaka. It consists of 34 long suttas of which each individual one treats intensively some particular point or points of the doctrine. The Buddha, like other Indian teachers of his time, taught by conversation. He followed the literary habit of his time by embodying his doctrine in set phrases, sutras, on which he enlarged on different occasiions in different ways. When the Buddha died these sayings (suttas) were collected together by his disciples into the great Nikayas of which the present one is the first.
