This volume contains the papers presented at the title conference. Speakers from 13 different countries were represented at the meeting. A broad range of topics in theoretical and applied wave propagation is covered.

This conference was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, July 10-14, 2000. This volume contains papers presented at the conference covering a broad range of topics in theoretical and applied wave propagation in the general areas of acoustics, electromagnetism, and elasticity. Both direct and inverse problems are well represented. This volume, along with the three previous ones, presents a state-of-the-art primer for research in wave propagation. The conference is conducted by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique with the cooperation of SIAM.

This volume includes articles on the mathematical modeling and numerical simulation of various wave phenomena. For many years Waves 2003 and its five prior conferences have been an important forum for discussions on wave propagation. The topic is equally important for fundamental sciences, engineering, mathematics and, in particular, for industrial applications. Areas of specific interest are acoustics, electromagnetics, elasticity and related inverse and optimization problems. This book gives an extensive overview of recent developments in a very active field of scientific computing.

The Fourth SIAM International Conference on Data Mining continues the tradition of providing an open forum for the presentation and discussion of innovative algorithms as well as novel applications of data mining. This is reflected in the talks by the four keynote speakers who discuss data usability issues in systems for data mining in science and engineering, issues raised by new technologies that generate biological data, ways to find complex structured patterns in linked data, and advances in Bayesian inference techniques. This proceedings includes 61 research papers.

The ALENEX workshop provides a forum for the presentation of original research in the implementation and experimental evaluation of algorithms and data structures. This volume collects extended versions of the 12 papers that were selected for presentation.

The Fifth SIAM International Conference on Data Mining continues the tradition of providing an open forum for the presentation and discussion of innovative algorithms as well as novel applications of data mining. Advances in information technology and data collection methods have led to the availability of large data sets in commercial enterprises and in a wide variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. The field of data mining draws upon extensive work in areas such as statistics, machine learning, pattern recognition, databases, and high performance computing to discover interesting and previously unknown information in data. This conference results in data mining, including applications, algorithms, software, and systems.

Multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) has recently emerged as a field of research and practice that brings together many previously disjointed disciplines and tools of engineering and mathematics. MDO can be described as a technology, environment, or methodology for the design of complex, coupled engineering systems, such as aircraft, automobiles, and other mechanisms, the behavior of which is determined by interacting subsystems.

Networked control systems (NCS) confer advantages of cost reduction, system diagnosis and flexibility, minimizing wiring and simplifying the addition and replacement of individual elements; efficient data sharing makes taking globally intelligent control decisions easier with NCS. The applications of NCS range from the large scale of factory automation and plant monitoring to the smaller networks of computers in modern cars, places and autonomous robots. Networked Control Systems presents recent results in stability and robustness analysis and new developments related to networked fuzzy and optimal control.
