Synopsis Ethnomedicine and Tribal Healing Practices in India by : Sunita Reddy
This book examines various aspects of ethnomedicine and tribal healing practices, including its importance for inclusion and integration from a health systems perspective. Tribal healing practices is an under-studied component in healthcare system, health policy and health systems research. The book consists of original research papers based on empirical studies done by anthropologists, sociologists, public health practitioners and research scientists in various parts of India. It discusses issues of non-codified folk healing, with a focus on the therapeutic ideas and practices of tribal communities, located in anthropological theory and methods. It has a balance of empirical papers, review and theoretical papers, not only explaining ‘what is inside the healing practices’ but also touching upon the question of ‘why’ and delving into ‘what should be’ looking into the possibility to apply it for a larger good i.e., health care for all. This book discusses several important issues related to legitimacy, evidence and efficacy, recognition, certification and integration, protection and preservation, bio-piracy and bioprospecting, benefit sharing and intellectual property rights, sustainable use of medicinal herbs and conservation of nature and natural resources, biodiversity and possibilities of mainstreaming tribal healing. It is of interest to students and researchers from medical anthropology, medical sociology, cultural geography, liberal studies, tribal studies, ecology, sustainability and development and public health.

Synopsis Re- Imagining Indigenous Medical Traditions in Travancore by : Dr.Vysakh.A.S
‘Re- Imagining Indigenous Medical Traditions in Travancore’ is a research endeavour to comprehend and map the fundamental premises on which the Indian system of Medicine was anchored. The Indian System of Medicine had been all encompassing and Universal in its philosophical precepts and practices not withstanding its regional particularities. The myriad facets of the discipline have transcended boundaries of geography and human intellect weaving a syncretic and synthetic tapestry of medical knowledge and service. The Kerala medical tradition that forms an integral part of the larger Indian medical lore has centuries of unbroken continuity. The totality of Kerala’s indigenous medical tradition is an amalgamation of medical wisdom underscored by an intimate interaction with Ashtavaidya, Aryavaidya, Folk, Tribal, etc.,consummating in a novel synthesis. These medical traditions functioned in Travancore as an interconnected and mutually complementing system of knowledge. The research effort re- imagining the germane theme moves on to conceptualize the process of evolution of a synthesized product of indigenous medicine in Kerala with particular reference to Travancore.

Synopsis Traditional Knowledge in Modern India by : Nirmal Sengupta
This book demonstrates how traditional knowledge can be connected to the modern world. Human knowledge of housing, health and agriculture dates back thousands of years, with old wisdom developing and becoming modern. But in the past few decades, global communities have increasingly become aware that some of this valuable knowledge has fallen by the wayside. This has sparked systematic efforts at the local, national and global levels to connect this neglected knowledge to the modern world. It discusses the origin of the topic, its importance, recent developments in India and abroad, and what is being done and still needs to be done in order to preserve India’s traditional knowledge. The discussions address a broad range of fields and organizations: from Basmati rice to Ayurvedic cosmetics; from traditional irrigation and folk music to modern drug discovery and climate change adaptation; and from the Biodiversity Convention to the WHO, WTO and WIPO.
