This book is divided into 10 chapters that present a generalization from CSD studies as a unified predictive theory of particulate systems. After an introduction to CSD and particle-size distribution systems, this book goes on examining several empirical, one-dimensional distribution functions suitable for the latter system. The next chapter presents a unified theory for multidimensional particle distributions which can be used to analyze and predict such distributions in certain regular, well-defined processes. Particulate processes are characterized by the co-presence of a contin uous phase and a dispersed (particulate) phase, and are widely used in industry for the manufacturing of many high-value products. Examples include the crystallization of proteins for pharmaceutical applications, the emulsion polymerization reactors for the production of latex, the aerosol synthesis of titania powder used in the production of white pig ments, and the thermal spray processing of nanostructured coatings. It is now well understood that the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of materials made with particulates depend heavily on the characteristics of the corresponding particle size distribution. This fact, together with recent advances in dynamics of infinite-dimensional sys tems and nonlinear control theory, has motivated extensive research on model-based control of particulate processes using population balances to achieve tight control of particle size distributions. This book - the first of its kind - presents general methods for the synthesis of nonlinear, robust and constrained feedback controllers for broad classes of particulate process models and illustrates their applica tions to industrially-important crystallization, aerosol and thermal spray processes. The controllers use a finite number of measurement sensors and control actuators to achieve stabilization of the closed-loop system, output tracking, attenuation of the effect of model uncertainty and han dling of actuator saturation.

This book represents a detailed and systematic account of the basic principles, developments and applications of the theory of nucleation. The formation of new phases begins with the process of nucleation and is, therefore, a widely spread phenomenon in both nature and technology. Condensation and evaporation, crystal growth, electrodeposition, melt crystallization, growth of thin films for microelectronics, volcano eruption and formation of particulate matter in space are only a few of the processes in which nucleation plays a prominent role. The book has four parts, which are devoted to the thermodynamics of nucleation, the kinetics of nucleation, the effect of various factors on nucleation and the application of the theory to other processes, which involve nucleation. The first two parts describe in detail the two basic approaches in nucleation theory - the thermodynamic and the kinetic ones. They contain derivations of the basic and most important formulae of the theory and discuss their limitations and possibilities for improvement. The third part deals with some of the factors that can affect nucleation and is a natural continuation of the first two chapters. The last part is devoted to the application of the theory to processes of practical importance such as melt crystallization and polymorphic transformation, crystal growth and growth of thin solid films, size distribution of droplets and crystallites in condensation and crystallization.
