The truth was, of course, that his statement was not a law at all, but a' mere rule--a general statement of facts as they happen to exist, not an explanation of them. "The so-called practical man takes his stand on rules, the scientist abides by principles. This is the great distinction between them and this is why they so little comprehend each other. The practical man has to do with events. Events or phenomena are the result of laws acting in combination. It is the business of the theorist to extricate and study these laws separately. The practical man finds the concrete fact, a synthesis of the numerous forces behind them. The scientist is bent on analysis. We all know how the synthesis of laws in concrete cases present a confused and seething mass without apparent rhyme or reason like the Niagara whirlpool. It is small wonder that the practical man, like the captain of the ' Maid of The Mist', wending his way through such a chaos should frame rough generalizations to guide him and should mistake these practical rules for scientific laws. On the other hand the pure theorist, sticking to some single isolated principle, is naturally at a loss when he attempts to apply it to the actual world. The former makes of science a sorry hodge-podge. The latter makes of practice a dismal failure. Many a business man has made himself ridiculous by his opinions on political economy and many an economist has got the worst of the bargain when dealing in Wall Street. "I have tried to express in a very rough, and I fear a very tedious way, my notion of what makes up the common character of scientific-minded...

Synopsis The Moral Background by : Gabriel Abend

In recent years, many disciplines have become interested in the scientific study of morality. However, a conceptual framework for this work is still lacking. In The Moral Background, Gabriel Abend develops just such a framework and uses it to investigate the history of business ethics in the United States from the 1850s to the 1930s. According to Abend, morality consists of three levels: moral and immoral behavior, or the behavioral level; moral understandings and norms, or the normative level; and the moral background, which includes what moral concepts exist in a society, what moral methods can be used, what reasons can be given, and what objects can be morally evaluated at all. This background underlies the behavioral and normative levels; it supports, facilitates, and enables them. Through this perspective, Abend historically examines the work of numerous business ethicists and organizations—such as Protestant ministers, business associations, and business schools—and identifies two types of moral background. "Standards of Practice" is characterized by its scientific worldview, moral relativism, and emphasis on individuals' actions and decisions. The "Christian Merchant" type is characterized by its Christian worldview, moral objectivism, and conception of a person's life as a unity. The Moral Background offers both an original account of the history of business ethics and a novel framework for understanding and investigating morality in general.
