Synopsis The Wisdom Of The Ancients And New Atlantis (1886) by : Francis Bacon

Bacon wrote this book at the age of forty-eight, four years after the publication of his Two Books of the Advancement of Learning the first important work of the series that set forth his philosophy of Nature, and three years before the publication of the second edition (enlarged in its contents from ten to thirty-eight) of the Essays, that set forth his philosophy of Human Life. Bacon's New Atlantis written at the age of sixty-three, in the days of his withdrawal from all public office, and about two years before his death, at High-gate, on the 9th of April, 1626, was not published until the year after his death. It is unfinished, but nearly finished. Solon was said to have been writing in his last days of a perfect island of Atlantis. Plato, in his unfinished Critias left part of a sketch of an ideal conflict, by citizens of an ideal Athens, with iuYaders from a vast island of Atlantis, fabled to be where America long afterwards was found; and Bacon placed his New Atlantis in another island continent, fabled to be where Australia has since been found. Like his Wisdom of the Ancients, Bacon's New Atlantis was written and first published in Latin.

Synopsis Wisdom of the Ancients by : Neil Oliver

THE PERFECT READ FOR TROUBLED TIMES From the bestselling author of The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places comes this inspiring and beautifully written meditation on the wisdom inherited from our ancestors. For all we have gained in the modern world, simple peace of mind is hard to find. In a time that is increasingly fraught with complexity and conflict, we are told that our wellbeing relies on remaining as present as possible. But what if the key to being present lies in the past? In Wisdom of the Ancients, Neil Oliver takes us back in time, to grab hold of the ideas buried in forgotten cultures and early civilizations. From Laetoli footprints in Tanzania to Keralan rituals, stone circles and cave paintings, Oliver takes us on a global journey through antiquity. A master storyteller, drawing on immense knowledge of our ancient past, he distils this wisdom into twelve messages that have endured the test of time, and invites us to consider how these might apply to our lives today. The result is powerful and inspirational, moving and profound.

Synopsis Francis Bacon's New Atlantis in the Foundation of Modern Political Thought by : Kimberly Hurd Hale

Francis Bacon, long considered a minor figure in the founding of modern political thought, is now recognized as one of its foremost thinkers. Bacon not only championed a new type and method of scientific inquiry, he also developed a plan for how modern society could be re-ordered to accommodate and promote scientific progress. Bacon’s scientific writings cannot be wholly understood apart from his political writings, and many of his works combine the two topics so subtly that it is difficult to even place them in a definitive category; in this book, Kimberly Hurd Hale identifies the thread in Bacon’s body of work that links modern science and liberalism. Hale provides a detailed analysis of New Atlantis, examining Bacon’s place in the founding of modern political philosophy and the ways he relates to Plato, Machiavelli, and Hobbes. Hurd argues that Bacon’s demonstration of scientific rule in the New Atlantis is not meant as a blueprint for modern society; rather it shows us the dangers of a scientific society devoid of liberty. By examining what is troubling about the New Atlantis, this book explains what problems lead to the emergence of Atlantean societies, i.e. societies that are prosperous, ambitious, and doomed. It shows that Bacon’s portrait of Bensalem may provide the light necessary to guide those of us living in a world shaped by modern science through the dangerous seas.
