Synopsis A Short History of the Westminster Assembly (Classic Reprint) by : William Beveridge

Excerpt from A Short History of the Westminster Assembly This little work is nothing more than what it professes to be, a short history of the Westminster Assembly. It is hoped that the work will be found a fair and accurate statement of the historical facts associated with the Assembly. The author has done his best to work over for himself and with his own eyes the materials on which the history is based. These materials are abundant, and it is only too probable that much has escaped his notice and research. The Westminster Assembly was an epoch in the creed forming age in which it met, and the results of its deliberations have been far-reaching. Recent events in Scotland, notably the decision of the House of Lords on August lst, 1904, in the Free Church of Scotland Appeals Case, have given a fresh interest to the Assembly and its work, more especially the Confession of Faith. Attention may, therefore, be directed to two Notes appended to Chapter IX. These Notes have arisen directly out of the judgment of the House of Lords, and contain matter which may be of some interest to students of the Assembly. Richard the Lion-hearted, his brother John, and Henry II., attempted indeed to defy the papal power, but each was made to cower before it, and J ohn and Henry were craven enough to hold their kingdoms as a gift from Innocent III., and to pay him trib ute. As his vassals. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines (Classic Reprint) by : William Maxwell Hetherington

Excerpt from History of the Westminster Assembly of Divines Divines, by whose labours were produced the Confession of Faith, the Directory of Public Worship, the Form of Church Government, and the Catechisms, which have so long been held as the Standards of the Presbyterian Churches through out the world. Especially in such a time as the present, when all distinctive Presbyterian principles are not only called in question, but also misrepresented and condemned, such a want has become absolutely unendurable, unless Presbyterians are willing to permit their Church to perish under a load of unanswered, yet easily refuted, calumny. And as the best refutation of calumny is the plain and direct statement of truth, it is by that process that I have endeavoured to vindicate the principles and the character of the Presbyterian Church. Synopsis The Place of the Westminster Assembly in Modern History (Classic Reprint) by : John De Witt

Excerpt from The Place of the Westminster Assembly in Modern History In the modern world, this great idea began its mission in the Pro testant Reformation. But the Protestant Reformation at the begin ning did not give to it the place it soon afterwards assumed. The sovereignty of God in the history and destiny of every soul was the belief of Luther, as centuries before it had been the belief of St. Augustine. It was not, however, until the Institutes of the Chris tian Religion were written by John Calvin, that the great truth of the sovereignty of God was formulated and correlated to the other doctrines of Christianity in precisely the mode in which it became the great historical force it afterward proved to be in the spheres of religion and politics. For Luther followed St. Augustine, and there 1s an important dis tinction to be made between the place which predestination holds in the doc'trinal system of Augustine, and the place which the eter nal purpose holds in the doctrinal system of Calvin. The profound experience of sin and grace of the North African father brought him to the conviction that God alone is the author of man's salva tion, for man is unable not only to effect it, but to begin the new creation, from death to life. And therefore the one ultimate explanation of the fact that regeneration is not universal is for him to be found in the sovereign and absolute predestination of God. Excerpt from Memorial Volume of the Westminster Assembly, 1647-1897: In Commemoration of the Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Westminster Assembly, and of the Formation of the Westminster Standards The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the United States, held in 1896 at Memphis, Tenn., resolved to commemorate in some suitable way the Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Westminster Assembly of Divines. It also appointed an ad z'm'en'm committee to prepare an order of exercises for this cele bration by the Assembly of 1897. This Assembly met at Charlotte, N. C., and these commemorative services were held in connection with its sessions. Eleven ad dresses oi great excellence were delivered before the Assembly, and in the presence of very large audiences. The Assembly resolved to have these addresses pub lished in a suitable volume, and appointed a small com mittee to cooperate with the Committee of Publication in issuing it. An Introduction is added, which may have some value, and the portraits inserted may give additional interest to the volume. Synopsis The Westminster Assembly Its History by : Alexander Ferrier Mitchell

Excerpt from The Westminster Assembly Its History: And Standards Being the Baird Lecture When appointed Baird Lecturer for 1882, the Author chose as the subject of his Lectures, 'Epochs in the History of the Reformed Church of Scotland.' But the state of his health during 1881, and his desire to complete without delay his researches on the Westminster Assembly - a subject which had engaged his attention for some years, and on which he had previously given lectures on both sides of the Atlantic - led him to ask that he might be allowed to substitute that subject for the one first chosen, and to write additional lectures on it. To this the Trustees most kindly consented, and seven additional lectures were prepared, which with those previously written make up the present volume. His best thanks arc due to the Trustees, as well for the indulgence they have shown him as for the kind aid they have promised to help forward the publication of the remainder of the Minutes of the Westminster Assembly.
