Synopsis The Warden's Daughter by : Jerry Spinelli

From Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli comes the story of a girl searching for happiness inside the walls of a prison. And don't miss the author's highly anticipated new novel, Dead Wednesday! Cammie O'Reilly lives at the Hancock County Prison--not as a prisoner, she's the warden's daughter. She spends the mornings hanging out with shoplifters and reformed arsonists in the women's excercise yard, which gives Cammie a certain cache with her school friends. But even though Cammie's free to leave the prison, she's still stuck. And sad, and really mad. Her mother died saving her from harm when she was just a baby. You wouldn't think you could miss something you never had, but on the eve of her thirteenth birthday, the thing Cammie most wants is a mom. A prison might not be the best place to search for a mother, but Cammie is determined and she's willing to work with what she's got. "A tapestry of grief and redemption, woven by a master storyteller ....Moving and memorable." --Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

Synopsis The Wardens by : Clark Howard

The decades-spanning saga of a woman’s life in a family of prison wardens—and among the criminals they guard—by a Spur Award–nominated author. Dru is the daughter of a warden, the first in a long line keeping watch over a local prison. This multigenerational epic follows Dru’s relationships and conflicts with men on both sides of the bars through the early twentieth century, when convicts were often treated brutally and lawlessness still lurked just under the surface of society in many parts of America. Rife with adventure, romance, and historical detail, The Wardens is a novel of love, heartbreak, danger, and one woman’s place in a family dynasty. “A superlative storyteller.” —Publishers Weekly

Synopsis The Tsarina's Daughter by : Ellen Alpsten

Ellen Alpsten's stunning new novel, The Tsarina's Daughter, is the dramatic story of Elizabeth, daughter of Catherine I and Peter the Great, who ruled Russia during an extraordinary life marked by love, danger, passion and scandal. Born into the House of Romanov to the all-powerful Peter the Great and his wife, Catherine, a former serf, beautiful Tsarevna Elizabeth is the envy of the Russian empire. She is insulated by luxury and spoiled by her father, who dreams for her to marry King Louis XV of France and rule in Versailles. But when a woodland creature gives her a Delphic prophecy, her life is turned upside down. Her volatile father suddenly dies, her only brother has been executed and her mother takes the throne of Russia. As friends turn to foes in the dangerous atmosphere of the Court, the princess must fear for her freedom and her life. Fate deals her blow after blow, and even loving her becomes a crime that warrants cruel torture and capital punishment: Elizabeth matures from suffering victim to strong and savvy survivor. But only her true love and their burning passion finally help her become who she is. When the Imperial Crown is left to an infant Tsarevich, Elizabeth finds herself in mortal danger and must confront a terrible dilemma--seize the reins of power and harm an innocent child, or find herself following in the footsteps of her murdered brother. Hidden behind a gorgeous, wildly decadent façade, the Russian Imperial Court is a viper’s den of intrigue and ambition. Only a woman possessed of boundless courage and cunning can prove herself worthy to sit on the throne of Peter the Great.

Imagine being the 5-year old informal air stewardess as Phillipa’s dad, Captain John Hankins, flies four world leaders to the Paris Peace Talks. After WW II, people in London were suffering. Captain Hankins flew his family to Nairobi,Africa where they built a farm near the Serengetti. Even though he was then flying for British Overseas Airways, he established a working farm. Young Phillipa and her family survived attacks from the Mau Mau, as well as columns of merciless fireants, man-eating tigers, poisonous pythons, debilitating diseases, and a culture totally foreign to a proper little English girl. After escaping from the Mau Mau in a tribal war known around the world, Phillipa and her family returned to London, and begins ballet school against the backdrop of a father who left the family to be the chief pilot for the President of Mexico and her severely depressed mother who hated her for not being a boy so she could have inherited English lands. Phillipa had some wonderful encounters with Queen Elizabeth II and finally was able to go to America as an au pair. The final chapters of the book highlight her having a family in California, owning her own ballet school, escaping from a dodgy first husband, and traveling to Spain and New Zealand to tend to each dying parent. Finally Phillipa ended up in Orlando, Florida armed with a new hope for a successful life.

Synopsis Letters from a Daughter by : Roger Legg

Ruth left school in 1979 after one year in the sixth form. She had, from an early age, decided on a career in nursing but before her training at Ormskirk Hospital she took a gap year, working as a volunteer for the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers. After qualifying as a nurse, Ruth then volunteered as a cook on Fair Isle before going to St Marys to qualify as a midwife. Soon after this she married Jeff Redgrave and went to live in Lancashire; thereafter to the Midlands and to Suffolk as her husband took up new employment opportunities. These, her letters, were written over a period of some 17 years. They have been faithfully reproduced and it is hoped that the reader will take pleasure in them, just as much as Ruths parents enjoyed receiving and reading them. Ruths parents, Iris and Roger Legg, were both born in South London and both were evacuated during WWII. They met and married at their local Baptist Church, making their home in London. Iris was a junior class room teacher, specialising in slow learning and difficult children. Sadly she died at the relatively young age of 60. Roger trained as a building services engineer and for many years taught this subject at the Southbank University. He took early retirement in 1991 and currently runs (as a volunteer) a Day Centre for refugees and asylum seekers.
