Synopsis The War of the 'Sixties (Classic Reprint) by : E. R. Hutchins

Excerpt from The War of the 'Sixties With the large number of books on our library shelves containing such a vast amount of information concerning the four years of war between the North and the South, it would seem almost presumptuous to attempt to add to it, yet it is hoped that this volume will be an addition, of both interest and value. There are some of the survivors of that war who think that they can give a detailed history of it, with minute descriptions of all the engagements they were in. The Editor gravely doubts this assumption. That there are a very large number who were especially impressed with one or more incidents there is no doubt. To such I have appealed for contributions, and from such only have I accepted articles for publication. My aim has been to collect real incidents - real facts from real participants - from persons who were there. These pages are not sectional, for it will be found that both the Union soldier and the Confederate have contributed. But two or three of the articles have been published before. One or two appeared several years ago in Harper's Weekly, but the manuscripts of these were sent to me by the authors, and Harper & Brothers kindly permitted their use here. To both I am indebted, as, indeed, I am indebted to all contributors. There have come to me scores of letters from the North and South, conveying the most cordial good wishes, and expressing pleasure at the prospect of the publication of this book. I am particularly grateful to Mrs. Logan and Mrs. Pickett, - distinguished women, - widows of two famous generals, a Union and a Confederate, who, amid a busy life, cheerfully found time to contribute an article each, and expressed an earnest hope for the early appearance of this book. Synopsis Memoirs of a Veteran Who Served as a Private in the 60s in the War Between the States by : I. Hermann

Excerpt from Memoirs of a Veteran Who Served as a Private in the 60s in the War Between the States: Personal Incidents, Experiences and Observations The following reminiscences after due'and careful consideration, are dedicated to the young, who are pausing at the portals of man hood, as well as womanhood, and who are con fronted with illusory visions and' representa tions, the goal of which is but seldom attained, even by the fewest fortunates, and then only by unforeseen circumstances and haphazards, not illustrated in the mapped out program for future welfare, greatness and success. Often the most sanguine persons have such optimistic illusions, which, unless most carefully considered will lead them into irreparable errors. Even the political changes, often times necessary in the government of men, are great factors to smash into fragments the best and most illusory plans, and cast into the shadow, for a time being at least, the kindliest, philan thropic and best intentions of individual efforts, until the Wheel of Fortune again turns in his direction, casting a few sparks of hope in his ultimate favor, and which is seldom realized. Synopsis Recollections of the Civil War by : Charles Anderson Dana

Excerpt from Recollections of the Civil War: With the Leaders at Washington and in the Field in the Sixties It is proper to note the circumstance that the three years covered by Mr. Dana's Recollections as here recorded constitute the only term during which he held any public office, and the only break in more than half a century of continuous experience in the making of newspapers. His connection with the Gov ernment during those momentous years is an episode in the story of a life that throbbed from boyhood to age with intellectual energy, and was crowded with practical achievement. Synopsis Berkeley at War : The 1960s by : W.J. Rorabaugh Professor of History University of Washington

Berkeley, California, was the bellwether of the political, social, and cultural upheaval that made the 1960s a unique period of American history--a time when the top-down methods of a conservative establishment collided head-on with the bottom-up, grass-roots ethos of the civil rights movement and an increasingly well-educated and individualistic middle class. W.J. Rorabaugh, who attended the graduate school of the University of California at Berkeley in the early 1970s, presents a lively and informative account of the events that overtook and changed forever what had once been a quiet, conservative white suburb. The rise of the Free Speech Movement, which gave a voice to disfranchised students; the growth and increasing militance of a black community struggling to end segregation; the emergence of radicalism and the anti-war movement; the blossoming of "hippie" culture, with its scorn for materialism and enthusiasm for experimentation with everything from sex and drugs to Eastern philosophies; the beginnings of modern-day feminism and environmentalism--and how all of these coalesced in the explosive conflict over People's Park--are traced in a meticulously researched and authoritative narrative. At issue was the question of power, and the struggle between the establishment and the powerless led to developments that the advocates of a freer society could scarcely have foreseen: Ronald Reagan, elected governor of California in reaction to the events at Berkeley, and Edwin H. Meese III, who battled against the student movement and People's Park, rose to national power in the 1980s (without, however, gaining any popularity in Berkeley, where Walter Mondale won 83 percent of the vote in 1984). An invaluable account of its time and place, this book anchors the '60s in American history, both before and since that colorful decade.

Synopsis An American Dream by : Norman Mailer

In this wild battering ram of a novel, which was originally published to vast controversy in 1965, Norman Mailer creates a character who might be a fictional precursor of the philosopher-killer he would later profile in The Executioner’s Song. As Stephen Rojack, a decorated war hero and former congressman who murders his wife in a fashionable New York City high-rise, runs amok through the city in which he was once a privileged citizen, Mailer peels away the layers of our social norms to reveal a world of pure appetite and relentless cruelty. One part Nietzsche, one part de Sade, and one part Charlie Parker, An American Dream grabs the reader by the throat and refuses to let go. Praise for An American Dream “Perhaps the only serious New York novel since The Great Gatsby.”—Joan Didion, National Review “A devil’s encyclopedia of our secret visions and desires . . . the expression of a devastatingly alive and original creative mind.”—Life “A work of fierce concentration . . . perfectly, and often brilliantly, realistic [with] a pattern of remarkable imaginative coherence and intensity.”—Harper’s “At once violent, educated, and cool . . . This is our history as Hawthorne might have written it.”—Commentary Praise for Norman Mailer “[Norman Mailer] loomed over American letters longer and larger than any other writer of his generation.”—The New York Times “A writer of the greatest and most reckless talent.”—The New Yorker “Mailer is indispensable, an American treasure.”—The Washington Post “A devastatingly alive and original creative mind.”—Life “Mailer is fierce, courageous, and reckless and nearly everything he writes has sections of headlong brilliance.”—The New York Review of Books “The largest mind and imagination [in modern] American literature . . . Unlike just about every American writer since Henry James, Mailer has managed to grow and become richer in wisdom with each new book.”—Chicago Tribune “Mailer is a master of his craft. His language carries you through the story like a leaf on a stream.”—The Cincinnati Post
