Synopsis The Emigrant Experience by : Margaret MacDonell
Every man has a story to tell and this was no less true of the hundreds of emigrants from the Highlands and the Hebrides who crossed the Atlantic from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century to settle in North America. This selection of Scottish Gaelic songs brings to light the revealing and often touching poems of some twenty such emigrants. Focusing on themes of emigration and exile, their subjects range from the biblical motif of liberation from tyranny (pre-destined by the Creator who provided a land of bounty across the seas), to the happier future anticipated for his daughter by a loyalist fugitive in North Carolina; from a sense of security on the part of a clergyman settled in Pictou County after the disruption in his homeland, to the disenchantment of an emigrant to Manitoba who longed to move on to North Dakota. Their tone may be lyrical, elegaic, or satirical. Songs from various parts of the new world – the Carolinas, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Ontario, and the Canadian west – are included in Gaelic with a facing English translation. A short biography of each bard prefaces the selections attributed to him or her. Detailed notes provide a guide to sources and variant texts, elucidate obscure passages, and define the social and cultural context in which the songs originated. An appendix reproduces the tunes for nine of these songs. This is a book that will inform and entertain both the specialist and the general reader.

Synopsis The Tourist by : Olen Steinhauer
In The Tourist, Olen Steinhauer—twice nominated for the Edgar Award—tackles an intricate story of betrayal and manipulation, loyalty and risk, in an utterly compelling novel that is both thoroughly modern and yet also reminiscent of the espionage genre's most touted luminaries. “Here’s the best spy novel I’ve ever read that wasn’t written by John le Carré.” —Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly In Olen Steinhauer's explosive New York Times bestseller, Milo Weaver has tried to leave his old life of secrets and lies behind by giving up his job as a "tourist" for the CIA—an undercover agent with no home, no identity—and working a desk at the CIA's New York headquarters. But staying retired from the field becomes impossible when the arrest of a long-sought-after assassin sets off an investigation into one of Milo's oldest colleagues and friends. With new layers of intrigue being exposed in his old cases, he has no choice but to go back undercover and find out who's been pulling the strings once and for all. *BONUS CONTENT: This edition of The Tourist includes a new introduction from the author and a discussion guide

Modern Fantasy about the corporate take over of America. In a time when everything has its price, families corporate sponsored and dreams bought and sold like currency, Wisconsin business school graduate, Jake Kramer finds himself without a dream and little hope. To regain inspiration, Jake visits Spade's Manhattan, the brainchild of financial tycoon Jonathon Spade, who years ago evicted all New York City residents to the outer boroughs and forced them to work as actors in his Manhattan theme park for tourists. But when Jake arrives at Spade's Manhattan he realizes Spade's dreams come at a heavy price and equal penalty for disobedience. It is only when he meets Liza, an aspiring actress and escapes to Brooklyn, breaking Spade's tourism rule; it makes him a wanted man. While Spade's goons search for Jake, it is in Brooklyn where he learns working for your dreams far outweighs living a fantasy.
