Synopsis The Theological Works of the Rev. John Johnson, M. A., Vicar of Cranbrook in the Diocese of Canterbury, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by : John Johnson

Excerpt from The Theological Works of the Rev. John Johnson, M. A., Vicar of Cranbrook in the Diocese of Canterbury, Vol. 2 It must be owned, this gentleman gives but a very im perfect account of his discovery of this and the other three fragments, which he has published, Of this very ancient Father; he only tells his reader, that they were taken out of certain ancient books in the royal library at Turin, which contained extracts from the Fathers 3 but he does not so much as give an inquisitive reader any directions where to find these frag ments, if he should have an opportunity of consulting the books from which they were transcribed. But I shall not enter into any dispute upon this head 3 if they are genuine, here is a new authority from the holy and apostolical Irenaeus for the doctrine of the Sacrifice Of the Eucharist 3 if they are not, yet we are sufficiently sure from the other printed works of this most ancient writer, that this was the doctrine and practice of the age in which he lived.2 Pet. Synopsis The Theological Works of the Rev. John Johnson, M. A, Vol. 1 by : John Johnson

Excerpt from The Theological Works of the Rev. John Johnson, M. A, Vol. 1: Vicar of Cranbrook in the Diocese of Cantebury Considerable delay has occurred in the publication of this Volume, from accidental circumstances. Owing to the difficulty of obtaining a copy of the Second Edition, (which came out in 1724, in the Author's life-time, and which is now become extremely rare, ) it was found necessary to begin working with the First Edition, (that of 17 145) and the Volume had been completely prepared for the press as early as July last, before a copy of the Second Edition was oh tained which, of course, involved a thorough examination de novo. For the loan of that copy, the' Committee is in debted to the courtesy, of the Rev. C. L; Cornish, m.a. Of Exeter College. All the passages, inserted hy.the Author in this Second Edition, _ha've been distinguished'in the pre sent by being inclosed in brackets; only it must be oh served, that where instances occur of single words brack etted, they have been put in by the Editor on his own responsibility and he trusts that it will clearly appear from the context, that in the very few instances of their oc currence such a course was necessary. There are several passages in the text of the First Edition, which the Author has entirely omitted in the Second these it has been thought advisable to retain in the present Edition in the shape of notes. The reader will thence have an opportunity of dis criminating the shades of theological difference (if any such really exist to which Johnson' s mind was subject m a decade of years and the Editor is thereby spared the invidious task of assuming their-arbitration. A few sentences only have been entirely omitted, which the Author has withdrawn in his Second Edition, and wherein he had been betrayed, by the heat of controversy, into an undue asperity of expression. Synopsis Joseph Ratzinger and the Healing of Reformation-Era Divisions by : Emery de Gaál

Edited by Emery de Gaál and Matthew Levering, Joseph Ratzinger and the Healing of Reformation-Era Divisions examines Joseph Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI’s manifold contributions to Catholic-Protestant theological reflection. The collection opens with an introduction comparing Ratzinger’s approach to ecumenism to that of Karl Rahner. Rahner argues that the structural uniting of Protestants and Catholics should take place now without worrying about doctrinal differences. In contrast, Ratzinger argues that unity in Christ requires probing the doctrinal differences and seeking a deeper understanding of the reasoning of each side—on the grounds that the truth of the Gospel that each side desires to preserve will ultimately be the basis for the only kind of Christian ecclesial unity worth having, namely, a unity of the basis of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Detailed essays follow, treating a number of loci including papal primacy, ecumenical principles, liturgy, evangelization, Mariology, Christ’s birth and the celebration of Christmas, public theology, Christocentrism, Martin Luther, charity, conscience, missiology, justification, the reception of Ratzinger/Benedict in Radical Orthodoxy, and Scripture and Tradition. These essays run the full gamut of Ratzinger/Benedict’s major themes and preoccupations. Ten of the essays are by Catholic scholars, and seven by Protestant scholars. Contributors include many of the world’s leading Ratzinger experts, and the volume opens with an essay by Bishop Rudolf Voderholzer, Director of the Pope Benedict XVI Institute in Regensburg, Germany.
