Synopsis Hydrology by : Ian Watson

Hydrology covers the fundamentals of hydrology and hydrogeology, taking an environmental slant dictated by the emphasis in recent times for the remediation of contaminated aquifers and surface-water bodies as well as a demand for new designs that impose the least negative impact on the natural environment. Major topics covered include hydrological principles, groundwater flow, groundwater contamination and clean-up, groundwater applications to civil engineering, well hydraulics, and surface water. Additional topics addressed include flood analysis, flood control, and both ground-water and surface-water applications to civil engineering design.

Synopsis Fokker-Planck Solution of the Theis Equation by : Mahmut Sercan Ceyhan

The Fokker-Planck-Equation (FPE) methodology proposed by Kavvas (2003) was applied to the transient state confined groundwater flow under the initial and boundary conditions leading to the Theis problem (Theis, 1935). Towards that goal, the differential form of the Theis equation was converted to an ordinary differential equation (ODE) by using the non-dimensionalizing symmetry transformations determined from the symmetry analysis. The resulting ODE and the transformed initial and boundary conditions formed an end value problem in the symmetry space. The backward form of the Master Key Equation provided by Kavvas (2003) was used in order to write the FPE, which describes the evolution of the probability density function of the state variable for this system. Numerical solutions of the FPE was obtained with a hybrid, higher order numerical scheme that uses the explicit Lax-Wendroff Scheme with a Flux Limiter for the advective terms and the implicit Crank-Nicholson scheme for the dispersive terms. This hybrid scheme, combined with the appropriate discretization of the solution domain, made it possible to obtain a solution without numerical dispersion. The results of the FPE methodology were compared with the Monte-Carlo solutions of the analytical Theis solution. The comparison shows a good match in terms of the ensemble mean, variance, and probability density functions in general. The FPE methodology overestimated the ensemble variance in the close vicinity of the well.

Synopsis Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition by : Neven Kresic

Coupling the basics of hygrogeology with analytical and numerical modeling methods, Hydrogeology and Groundwater Modeling, Second Edition provides detailed coverage of both theory and practice. Written by a leading hydrogeologist who has consulted for industry and environmental agencies and taught at major universities around the world, this unique book fills a gap in the groundwater hydrogeology literature. With more than 40 real-world examples, the book is a source for clear, easy-to-understand, and step-by-step quantitative groundwater evaluation and contaminant fate and transport analysis, from basic laboratory determination to complex analytical calculations and computer modeling. It provides more than 400 drawings, graphs, and photographs, and a variety of useful tables of all key groundwater parameters, as well as lucid, straightforward answers to common hydrogeological problems. Reflecting nearly ten years of new scholarship since the publication of the bestselling first edition, this second edition is wider in focus with added and updated examples, figures, and problems, yet still provides information in the author's trademark, user-friendly style. No other book offers such carefully selected examples and clear, elegantly explained solutions. The inclusion of step-by-step solutions to real problems builds a knowledge base for understanding and solving groundwater issues.

Synopsis Fractional Operators with Constant and Variable Order with Application to Geo-hydrology by : Abdon Atangana

Fractional Operators with Constant and Variable Order with Application to Geo-hydrology provides a physical review of fractional operators, fractional variable order operators, and uncertain derivatives to groundwater flow and environmental remediation. It presents a formal set of mathematical equations for the description of groundwater flow and pollution problems using the concept of non-integer order derivative. Both advantages and disadvantages of models with fractional operators are discussed. Based on the author's analyses, the book proposes new techniques for groundwater remediation, including guidelines on how chemical companies can be positioned in any city to avoid groundwater pollution. - Proposes new aquifer derivatives for leaky, confined and unconfined formations - Presents useful aids for applied scientists and engineers seeking to solve complex problems that cannot be handled using constant fractional order derivatives - Provides a real physical interpretation of operators relevant to groundwater flow problems - Models both fractional and variable order derivatives, presented together with uncertainties analysis

Synopsis Aquifer Hydraulics by : Vedat Batu
