Synopsis A Booklover's Guide to New York by : Cleo Le-Tan

An illustrated guide to New York City tailored for the book-obsessed explorer showcasing the city's best bookshops; libraries; homes and haunts of world-famous writers; and scenes from literary classics with charming drawings by the famed New Yorker cover artist Pierre Le-Tan. A Booklover's Guide to New York is a love letter to everything literary in New York City. It is a book all about books. The book is an object in itself, designed as the ultimate little tome any book collector would love to acquire, layered with witty Pierre Le-Tan drawings, as well as photographs of some of the most precious bookish locations. Rediscover New York in the most fashionably literate way: whether you are in need of an exceptionally rare edition of your favorite novel (perhaps to be found in the dark and musty backroom of The Center for Fiction), or the most tranquil place to devour a short story on a wintry day (an empty underground food court in a Midtown skyscraper), or if you are looking to follow in the footsteps of a beloved author or novella character (like Capote's Grady and Clyde in Central Park Zoo), this will be your ultimate companion. Part guide, part sophisticated scrapbook and part desirable object, A Booklover's Guide to New York is an absolute must for any book-savvy person--the young bookworm or old scholar, the visiting tourist or homegrown New Yorker, the aspiring writer or doting parent.

Synopsis The Sun's Guide to New York by : Colin H. Livingstone

Excerpt from The Sun's Guide to New York: Replies to Questions Asked Every Day by the Guests and Citizens of the American Metropolis; Suggestions to Sightseers and Practical Information for Practical People According to American standards these people live in misery, but their condition is undoubtedly far better than it was in Europe. Hundreds of them may crowd into one tenement here, but the Board of Health insists that they have an ample supply of water, that the houses are properly sewered, and that they do not so overcrowd a building as to deprive any of a sufficiency of air. The streets between these tenements are kept fairly clean, and the people are protected perforce by vaccination and sanitation from the ravages of disease. There are no rookeries in New York. When the visitor goes slumming he is guided along brightly-lighted streets, lined with substantial tenements of from four to eight stories in height, and at almost every corner he catches the glint of a policeman's buttons. But there are other foreign quarters in New York where the people are thoroughly prosperous and comfortable, and these should be visited as well as the abodes 0f the outcasts of Europe. One great amelioration of the lot of the latter is the city's freedom from climatic rigors. New York is the farthest south of any of the Metropolitan centers of the world. Hence the cost of heavy wraps and fuel is comparatively little if immi grants are content to be no warmer on chilly days than they were able to keep themselves at home. Americans are so lavish in their expenditures, however, that their coat and coal bills would bring dismay to most British householders. Synopsis Guide to the Sun by : Kenneth J. H. Phillips

The Sun has been an object of scientific interest since the time of the ancient Greeks. The vast amounts of observational data acquired in recent years have led to a greatly improved knowledge of the physics of the Sun. With a minimum of technicalities, this book gives an account of what we now know about the Sun's interior, its surface and atmosphere, its relation to the solar system including the earth, and its relation to other stars. The way that solar power is being converted to useful forms of energy is explained. The book is aimed at anyone with a broad science background interested in learning about the latest developments in solar studies, from those at high-school level to the non-specialist professional.
