Synopsis The Story of the Otago Church and Settlement (Classic Reprint) by : C. Stuart Ross

Excerpt from The Story of the Otago Church and Settlement The following pages make no pretensions to deal exhaustively with the subjects of which they treat. They are offered merely as a contribution towards a fuller knowledge than now obtains, of the planting and progress of the first and only Free Church colony in the world. To myself it has been a pleasant and congenial task to look back across the years that have passed over us since the first adventurous bands of pioneers set foot on Otago, and to watch the social convulsions which supervened upon the discovery of gold; to mark the organization and the rapid growth of the churches, which arc now so marvellously multiplied in the land; and to note the more important public events which awakened a general interest, and affected, more or less remotely, the social and religious life of the people. All the accessible literature on Otago has been read, and put, to some extent, under contribution. I have used just so much of it as I believed to be suitable for the purpose which I had in view. I have to acknowledge my indebtedness to the early files of the daily and weekly papers of Dunedin and Southland; especially am I under obligation to the Otago Colonist, the Otago Daily Times, The Evangelist, and the New Zealand Presbyterian, for information which has been largely used in the following pages. Synopsis Education and Educationists in Otago by : Charles Stuart Ross

Excerpt from Education and Educationists in Otago This Volume is complementary to The Story of the Otago Church and Settlement which was recently issued from the Press, and is designed to give some information regarding the far-reaching and enlightened views of the Founders of Otago, and the wise and patriotic efforts which they made to promoto the educational interests of tho people. It traces the growth and gradual expansion of the Common School System, and of the leading educational Institutions and Agencies which have been in active operation within the province from the period of its settlement, in 1848, until the present year; and it touches briefly on the services renderod to the Cause by those who have stood in the van of the movement, and have stamped, in some measure, their own personality upon it. For kind help rendered to mo in this undertaking I make grateful acknowledgment of my indebtedness to the Hon. George MacLean; Dr. John Hislop, of Dunedin; Dr. James Copland, of Gore; Rev. A. H. Stobo, of Invercargill; P. G. Pryde, Esq., Secretary of the Otago Education Board; and all other friends who have courteously replied to my inquiries, and furnished me with useful information on the subjects treated in the following pages. Synopsis Fifty Years Syne by : James Chisholm

Excerpt from Fifty Years Syne: A Jubilee Memorial of the Presbyterian Church of Otago He had been at a lecture on Otago, in the village school, and was just returning. It was an evening in the late autumn. There was a touch of frost in the air a film of white mist lay along the carse; a rank smell came from the decaying shaws of potatoes in a field close at hand and the spirits of the man were somewhat low, as, with bent head, he walked wearily along the well known road. Ere he reached his home, however, his head was elate; he walked with a resolute step, and a new hope was dawning in his soul. She heard his footstep, and then the latch was lifted, and he entered. The cement floor recently whitened, the blackened jambs brightly polished, and shining in the glow Of the fire-light above all the winsomeness of the woman who had walked bravely with him for the last ten years in sunshine and shadow, filled him with gladness. The quietness, and comfort, and subtle grace of a Christian home crept about his Spirit and lapt him as in an atmosphere of heaven, and he shrank from speaking about his newly-formed purpose. At last he said, with startling abruptness, I think we should go, Jean. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
