Excerpt from The Scientific Monthly, Vol. 2 Ore than years ago, there lived upon the Islands from Sumatra to the Philippines an ancient sea-faring race, the brown-skinned Sawaiori. Of their origin we know nothing, but that they had long been separated from the Indian Peninsula is evident, for there are no Sanscrit words in the language of their descendants. Synopsis The Popular Science Monthly, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by : Harry Houdini Collection

Excerpt from The Popular Science Monthly, Vol. 2 But to have a large surplus of vital energy implies a good organization, which is on the average of cases likely to last long. So that, in fact, the superiority of physique which is accompanied by strength of the instincts and emotions causing marriage is a superiority of physique also conducive to longevity. One further influence tells in the same direction. Marriage is not altogether determined by the desires of men; it is determined in part by the preferences of women. Other things equal, women are attracted toward men of power - physical, emotional, intellectual; and obviously their freedom of choice leads them in many cases to refuse inferior samples of men; especially the malformed, the diseased, and those who are ill-developed, physically and mentally. So that, in so far as marriage is determined by female selection, the average result on men is that, while the best easily get wives, a certain proportion of the worst are left without wives. This influence, therefore, joins in bringing into the ranks of married men those most likely to be long-lived, and keep ing in bachelorhood those least likely to be long-lived. Synopsis The Scientific Monthly, Vol. 15 by : J. Mckeen Cattell

Excerpt from The Scientific Monthly, Vol. 15: July, 1922 We do not know the cause of the 11-year sunspot period. Here then is work for the astronomers. Yet another important contact has this study developed. The rings in the beams of ancient ruins tell a story of the time of build ing, both as to its climate and the number of years involved and the order of building. This is anthropology. It will be mentioned on a later page. Viewed through the present perspective, there is one way of expressing the entire work which shows more clearly its human end, a contact always worth emphasizing. If the study works out as it promises, it will give a basis of long-range weather forecasting of immense practical value for the future and of large scientific value in interpreting the climate of the past. This statement of it carries to all a real idea of the central problem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Synopsis The Popular Science Monthly, Vol. 86 by : J. Mckeen Cattell

Excerpt from The Popular Science Monthly, Vol. 86: The Scientific Monthly To illustrate: the gases and vapors forming the outer strata of the Sun's atmosphere would in themselves produce bright-line spectra of the elements involved. If these gases and vapors could in effect be removed, without changing underlying conditions, the remaining condensed body of the Sun should have a continuous spectrum. The cooler overlying gases and vapors absorb those radiations from the deeper and hotter ourccs which the gases and vapors would themselves emit, and thus form the dark-line spectrum of the Sun. The stretches of spectrum between the dark lines are of course continuous-spectrum radiations. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
