Not illustrated. 1906 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter iii religion and the scientific record of creation I. The Right Of Hypothesis In Natural Science We shall spare ourselves many subsequent repetitions if, at the very outset of our glance at the work of Science, we discuss its right of hypothesis, that is, its right of advancing theories upon hitherto undiscovered causes of certain phenomena, without these theories having been beforehand proved to be correct. Science is often reproached with working far too much on mere hypotheses, and many people are of opinion that they can with this reproach speedily dispose of the frequently surprising results of scientific research or at least invalidate these results. This reproach is justified only in so far as it warns Science not to treat unproved hypotheses as if they were already proved, and not to posit them as actual laws or facts before it is really known whether they are laws of immutable validity or indeed facts at all. But the reproach is unjustifiable when it is intended to forbid Science advancing hypotheses and working with them as a basis. Hypotheses are absolutely indispensable for research in every branch of Science, and especially in Natural Science which more than any other perhaps is surrounded by unsolved problems. In the most extensive region of scientific research, the region of cosmic physics, there are some hypotheses of which the man of science is conscious that while they have been no more than mere hypotheses they have proved quite indispensable for his discoveries. Such hypotheses are the existence of ether, of the atom, of the molecule. No one can perceive these substances in any empirical way (that is " by experience "), and yet, without taking these for granted, the most important work and noblest triumphs o

In God and Natural Order: Physics, Philosophy, and Theology, Shaun Henson brings a theological approach to bear on contemporary scientific and philosophical debates on the ordered or disordered nature of the universe. Henson engages arguments for a unified theory of the laws of nature, a concept with monotheistic metaphysical and theological leanings, alongside the pluralistic viewpoints set out by Nancy Cartwright and other philosophers of science, who contend that the nature of physical reality is intrinsically complex and irreducible to a single unifying theory. Drawing on the work of theologian Wolfhart Pannenberg and his conception of the Trinitarian Christian god, the author argues that a theological line of inquiry can provide a useful framework for examining controversies in physics and the philosophy of science. God and Natural Order will raise provocative questions for theologians, Pannenberg scholars, and researchers working in the intersection of science and religion.

Excerpt from The Scientific Creed of a Theologian The immediate reason for undertaking the present work, was the honour conferred upon me by the reception of the degree of Doctor of Divinity at the hands of the Protestant Theological Faculty of the University of Tubingen in the year 1897. I felt that I ought to show my gratitude by way of some literary production, but I could not embark upon the work this involved until I had not only retired from my official position, but also given up many other duties connected with it, and found time to follow up my reading of some of the more recent and important scientific works, for the study of which my profession had not allowed me the necessary leisure. I believe. These two words are among the most explosive words any human can utter. The Apostles' Creed has shaped and guided Christian faith for almost two thousand years. Shared by Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox traditions, it is perhaps the most compelling statement of Christian doctrine the world has ever known. But do we know what it really means—and how it applies to us today? In The Apostles' Creed, renowned theologian and pastor R. Albert Mohler Jr. works line-by-line and phrase-by-phrase through each section of the Creed, revealing the rich truths it contains, including: the profound mystery of the Trinity the miracle of the Incarnation the world-shaking truth of the resurrection the hope of Christ's return the theological heritage contained in this ancient statement The Apostles’ Creed is an often-overlooked treasure that contains the power to shape us for vibrant and steadfast living today, equipping believers to live faithfully in a post-Christian culture.

In this short masterpiece, eminent scientist and theologian John Polkinghorne offers an accessible, yet authoritative, introduction to the stimulating field of science and theology. After surveying their volatile historical relationship, he leads the reader through the whole array of questions at the nexus of the scientific and religious quests. A lucid and lively writer, Polkinghorne provides a marvelously clear overview of the major elements of current science (including quantum theory, chaos theory, time, and cosmology). He then offers a concise outline of the character of religion and shows the joint potential of science of religion to illumine some of the thorniest issues in theology today: creation, the nature of knowledge, human and divine identity and agency. Polkinghorne aptly demonstrates that a sturdy faith has nothing to fear and much to gain from an intellectually honest appraisal of the new horizons of contemporary science.

"Based on his 1993-94 Gifford Lectures, Polkinghorne's task here is to ask challenging questions of the contemporary scientific worldview and to show how the range of possible answers carries beyond biology to spirit and beyond physics to God. . . . The single most important work of his theological corpus".-- First Things.

From five authors with over two decades of experience teaching origins together in the classroom, this is the first textbook to offer a full-fledged discussion of the scientific narrative of origins from the Big Bang through humankind, from biblical and theological perspectives. This work gives the reader a detailed picture of mainstream scientific theories of origins along with how they fit into the story of God's creative and redemptive action.
