Synopsis The Sand-Hills of Jutland by : H. c. Andersen

This is a story from the Jutland sand-hills, but it does not commence there; on the contrary, it commences far away towards the south, in Spain. The sea is the highway between the two countries. Fancy yourself there. The scenery is beautiful; the climate is warm. There blooms the scarlet pomegranate amidst the dark laurel trees; from the hills a refreshing breeze is wafted over the orange groves and the magnificent Moorish halls, with their gilded cupolas and their painted walls.

Synopsis The Sand-Hills of Jutland by : Hans Christian Andersen

Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author and poet, most famous for his fairy tales. Most English (as well as German and French) sources use the name "Hans Christian Andersen," but in Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia he is usually referred to as merely "H. C. Andersen. " During Andersen's lifetime he was feted by royalty and acclaimed as having brought joy to children across Europe. His fairy tales have been translated into over 150 languages and continue to be published in "millions of copies all over the world." In 1829, Andersen enjoyed a considerable success with a short story entitled A Journey on Foot from Holmen's Canal to the East Point of Amager. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Synopsis Hans Christian Andersen in American Literary Criticism of the Nineteenth Century by : Herbert Rowland

In Hans Christian Andersen in American Literary Criticism of the Nineteenth Century, Herbert Rowland argues that the literary criticism accompanying the publication of Hans Christian Andersen’s works in the United States compares favorably in scope, perceptiveness, and chronological coverage with the few other national receptions of Andersen outside of Denmark. Rowland contends that American commentators made it abundantly evident that, in addition to his fairy tales, Andersen wrote several novels, travelogues, and an autobiography which were all of more than common interest. In the process, Rowland shows that American commentators “naturalized” Andersen in the United States by confronting the sensationalism in the journalism and literature of the time with the perceived wholesomeness of Andersen’s writing, deploying his long fiction on both sides of the debate over the nature and relative value of the romance and the novel, and drawing on three of his works to support their positions on slavery, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.

Synopsis The Sand-Hills of Jutland by : Hans Christian Andersen

A collection of short stories by Hans Christian Anderson, set in beautiful surroundings with lively description of the characters and the ambiance. The variety of subjects keeps the readers thoroughly entertained. The flow is quite spontaneous. Processions of children parade the streets with lights and waving banners; and, above these, clear and lofty rises the vault of heaven, studded with glittering stars. Songs and castanets are heard; youths and girls mingle in the dance under the blossoming acacias; whilst beggars sit upon the sculptured blocks of marble, and refresh themselves with the juicy water-melon. Life dozes here: it is all like a charming dream, and one indulges in it.
