Synopsis The Rut by : Bernard Amador

This novel set in the North Country of New York State explores gay adoption in an entertaining way for both gay and general audiences. Ean is a young gay man who works as a Forensic Case Manager at a social services agency, who has been married to Stacy, an Assistant District Attorney, for three years. Stacy feels compelled to adopt a child Ean names Tur (Rut spelled backwards), who is about to be placed in foster care. As their journey with Tur begins, Ean almost loses Stacy in a car accident with a male bull moose. Stacy dies suddenly after years of disability. Ean tries to start a new life with Tur without Stacy; however, he encounters many impediments ranging from suicidal thoughts to the Cinderella complex. Ean must overcome the final conflict of allowing Mark, a moose-obsessed Department of Conservation (DEC) worker, to fully enter his life or perish in loneliness. In the end, Ean triumphs as he allows Mark, a new male "bull," into his life.

Synopsis Outa the Rut: Breaking Habits Before They Break You by : Neil McK. Agnew

For over 30 years weve studied people from all walks of life trying to break old habits some succeeded, most failed. Those who succeeded typically followed steps outlined in this book. You know from repeatedly breaking New Years resolutions that it takes more than will power and brains to succeed. We all have a very wise but mouthy little person living inside our heads - call them Tiny who tries to tell us when were being dumb. Most of us have figured out how to muzzle Tiny. Well show you how to use your particular Tinys accumulated wisdom about you and your well honed ability to fall off the wagon. As Oprah said concerning a recent weight gain: I didnt just fall off the wagon. I let the wagon fall on me. In the beginning we show you how to make smarter resolutions. More importantly in the remainder of the book we show you how to keep them. The last five chapters focus on trouble shooting, on showing you how to climb out, and stay out, of the rut after youve invariably slipped back in.

Synopsis Glaciers by : Alexis M. Smith

A Vulture Best Short Book A She Reads Indie Book Club Pick for Summer “Alexis Smith’s brilliant debut novel is filled with kaleidoscopic pleasures. Line by line, in and out of time, this is a haunted, joyful, beautiful book—a true gift.” —Karen Russell “Her story could be told in other people’s things. The postcards and the photographs. A garnet ring and a needlepoint of the homestead. The aprons hanging from her kitchen door. Her soft, faded, dog-eared copy of Little House in the Big Woods. A closet full of dresses sewn before she was born. All these things tell a story, but is it hers?” Isabel is a single twenty-something in Portland, Oregon, who repairs damaged books in the basement of the local library, dreaming of a life she can’t quite reach. She is filled with longing—for a life in Amsterdam even though she’s never visited, for the unrequited love of a coworker, for a simpler time from her childhood in Alaska among the threatened glaciers she loves, and for the perfect vintage dress to wear to a party that just might change everything. Unfolding over the course of a single day, Alexis M. Smith’s shimmering debut finds Isabel looking into her past—remembering her parents’ separation, a meeting with an astrologer, and a life-changing encounter with a glacier—and shows us how fleeting, everyday moments can reveal an entire life. In classic movies, in old photographs and unsent postcards, rare books, and thrifted gems, Glaciers tells the story of a young woman’s love of the past and a hope to make something new and all her own.
