Synopsis The Rise of Little Big Norway by : John F. L. Ross
"The Rise of Little Big Norway" explores the unlikely rise of Norway from peripherality to today’s global steward with an enviable work-life balance, influential oil fund and Arctic front-row seat. Drawing on wide-ranging source material, John Ross’s original approach combines astute observation, thoughtful analysis and a flowing essay style, leavened with the comparative insight that only a seasoned observer of the region can bring. The book examines the settings, histories and niche elements that lend Norway its distinctiveness and differentiate it from its Nordic neighbors. It gives special attention to the northern and Arctic dimensions of Norwegian life and elaborates a connecting thematic thread, the mobility that once took Vikings across the Atlantic in open boats and makes today’s Norwegians the most-traveled people on the planet. The result is a carefully crafted general study of Norway, a country long overlooked in favor of its Nordic neighbors but now a quiet force in its own right and a touchstone for twenty-first century issues ranging from identity politics to the Arctic melt. This book fills a major gap in the literature on Norway and the Nordic region.

Synopsis A History of Norway from the Earliest Times by : Hjalmar Hjorth Boyesen
This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ... XXXVII THE RECENT HISTORY OF NORWAY Since the great crisis which terminated in the impeachment of Prime Minister Selmer, the history of Norway has continued somewhat turbulent, although within the bounds of legality; and the contest between the nation and the crown has not yet been decided. Howbeit certain other matters have intervened alongside of the strictly constitutional agitation. Norway has followed the precedent of all other nations which tend towards democracy in associating attacks upon the Church with attempts to limit the power of the crown. The position of the country parson in Norway is one of considerable power and influence. He is, of course, a better educated man than the peasants by whom he is surrounded. Through his glebe he is a landowner; and where all estates are small he may be reckoned a considerable one. He is ex-offieio chairman of the District Board School; and he is very frequently chosen to represent his electoral district in the Storthing. It is this last fact which makes the Norwegian clergyman a more powerful person than his English colleague. We have not a pleasant picture of this pastor (praest) in Ibsen's writings; in the Straamand of " Love's Comedy," or the Dean (Provost) of" Brand." In fact, as we might guess, the literary class and the scientific {the illuminati) are his natural enemies. That he has his fair share of formalism and insincerity we may well suppose. But in any case it was inevitable that the new democracy, impatient of every kind of restraint, should begin a war against the influence of the Church. 1 By C. F. Keary, author of " The Vikings in Western Christendom," "Norway and the Norwegians," &c. For now the Liberal party began to split itself up; and democracy, as in other...

Synopsis Shark Drunk by : Morten Strøksnes
** BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week ** Shark Drunk is, in part, the tale of two men in a very small boat on the trail of a very big fish. It is also a story of obsession, enchantment and adventure. A love song to the sea, in all its mystery, hardship, wonder and life-giving majesty. In the great depths surrounding the remote Lofoten islands in Norway lives the Greenland shark. Twenty-six feet in length and weighing more than a tonne, it can live for 200 years. Its fluorescent green, parasite-covered eyes are said to hypnotise its prey, and its meat is so riddled with poison that, when consumed, it sends people into a hallucinatory trance. Armed with little more than their wits and a tiny rubber boat, Morten Strøksnes and his friend Hugo set out in pursuit of this enigmatic creature. Together, they tackle existential questions, experience the best and worst nature can throw at them, and explore the astonishing life teeming at the ocean’s depths.
