Synopsis The Reluctant Detective Goes South by : Adrian Spalding

The Reluctant Detective Goes South is a stand-alone humorous crime novel following the escapades of Martin Hayden and his irreverent sidekick Susan. Just because Martin runs a detective agency, it does not mean he has any intention of investigating anything, except the lunchtime menu at his favourite Michelin-starred restaurant. However, for the benefit of his mother he must occasionally appear to be working. Consequently, he agrees to help an old school friend who has found himself on the wrong side of the law and is now serving his community service in a charity centre in south London. Not that Martin ever wanted to visit such a place, but old dormitory chums help each other. Things become complicated for Martin when his eager assistant Susan sees a pile of parking tickets strewn across his desk. She believes his number plate has been cloned and decides they should investigate and find the culprit. Martin is not so sure that another investigation is such a good idea. After all, he has enough money to support his privileged lifestyle and pay the fines without question. Never one to be discouraged, Susan follows the leads, which take them to a run-down south London council estate, where Martin is introduced to a side of the capital he never imagined existed. Before long, Martin is reluctantly mixing with drug dealers, sex chat-line operators, loan sharks, ageing criminals plus an unbearable little girl, all of whom he considers to be UPS (unpleasant people sorts). Yet nothing will stop Susan getting at the truth, not even a male, good-looking Italian who collects saucy postcards and charms her with chilled Italian white wine.

Synopsis The Reluctant General by : Herb Sennett

The story of Deborah and Barak from the biblical book of Judges describes amazing courage and fortitude beyond modern comprehension. In this modern retelling of the old story, Herb Sennett brings to life the people of 1150 BC in such a way that their hopes, dreams, struggles, pain, and suffering help us face our own problems in the light of God's willingness to help his people whenever they are threatened with extinction. The Jewish people of that day knew little of warfare and tactics, but they were able to defeat the most powerful army of the day and then conquer the most heavily defended city in the area. This novel tells of their struggle to live free of oppression and fear through their faith in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Synopsis The Reluctant King by : Kwan

The King family is on the political rise in New York City, but must weather the violent storm wrought by their darkest secrets. “K’wan is exceptionally gifted at ratcheting up suspense . . . There’s no denying the writer’s talent for dark, gritty fiction. It’s a page-turner.” —Kirkus Reviews Meet the Kings, one of the most influential families in New York City. In the power circles of the movers and shakers, they are regarded as modern-day royalty. A politically connected father, a socialite mother, and three promising children: they look every bit the all-American family . . . but every family has secrets. Some darker than others. Of all the children, Shadow is the least like the rest of the Kings. To call him soft wouldn’t be quite accurate, but he lacks the leadership qualities of his older brother, Ghost, or the ruthless tendencies of his sister Lolli. Shadow is just . . . Shadow. Instead of accepting his role in the “Monarchy” created by his father, Shadow would rather spend his days chasing women and hanging out in the hood with his best friends, Fresh and Pain. He is totally oblivious to the perils that come with his last name—until danger introduces itself. On the night of their mother’s fiftieth birthday gala, their father, Chancellor, is set to announce his plans to turn his political focus beyond his current position as a member of the city council. He has tasted the benefits that come with holding office, and has the power and influence to make a serious run at climbing the political ladder. The future is looking bright for the King family. That is, until the devil comes to claim his due, and threatens to destroy everything Chancellor has worked to build. To survive the coming storm, each member of the royal family will have to make a sacrifice, even those who are reluctant to wear the crown.

Synopsis The Secret Detectives by : Ella Risbridger

A gripping, beautifully written historical mystery, from an incredible new voice in children's fiction. The body seemed to fall for a long time. There was no splash, or if there was it was lost in the waves. Isobel was frozen to the spot for a moment - and then her common sense caught up with her, and she stepped back quickly into the shadows. When Isobel Petty is orphaned, she finds herself being taken away from her home in India and sent to live with a distant uncle in England. On board the S.S. Marianna, she witnesses a shocking act - somebody being thrown overboard in the middle in the night. But when the ship's captain insists that nobody is missing, Isobel and her two new reluctant friends must solve two mysteries - the identities of both the murderer and the victim - before they reach England and the culprit has the chance to escape. Inspired by The Secret Garden and the golden age of crime writing, The Secret Detectives is perfect for fans of Robin Stevens and Katherine Rundell. "A thoroughly entertaining mystery and a heartening story of friendship. I loved it." - Katherine Woodfine, author of The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow

Synopsis The Reluctant Politician by : Chick Lung

The book begins with the kidnapping of Tony Denton's sixteen year old niece at a car wash and his involvement with the police as they try to locate her. Things start going wrong when police officers are pulled from the kidnapping case to work as decoys on a sting in the red light district, arresting prostitutes and their "johns". Tony losses it as he rants and raves against management of the police force in his hometown. When people tell Tony to stop griping and do something about it he reluctantly runs for sheriff, and to his surprise he wins the office. His only promise on the campaign trail had been that he would not allow any of his officers to be involved in arresting prostitutes or their "johns's", nor would he allow an officer to arrest anyone using drugs, which causes an uproar within the relgious community. Tony is so successful at taking his police officers away from these two areas and putting them to work solving the brutual murders and rapes that take place in his town that within the first two years the number of all major crimes in the town take a major nose dive. Even the papers in larger cities take notice and begin writing accounts of the small town sheriff that has a new method of fighting crimes. Soon Tony is being asked to run for higher office and this starts the remarkable story of the reluctant politician who changes the system, but as is always the case with the old saying, "be careful what you wish for, it might come true", in Tony's case he pulls the nation down a slippery slope faster and faster to destruction.
