Synopsis The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: October, 1934 (Classic Reprint) by : Hampden-Sydney College

Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 9: October, 1934 The Chesters were Puritans of New England, people of strong bodies, vigorous minds and marked Spiritual gifts. The Chapters dealing with Dr. Chester's early life at Mount Holly, Arkansas, where he was born in 1851, present a vivid picture of the pioneer days in that state when there were few luxuries and life was strenuous; slavery as it existed then is shown at its best; war incidents are related, and the trials of Reconstruction days are referred to in a calm and impartial manner. College life at Washington College (lexington, Vir ginia) is portrayed' and the young student's association with General Robert E. Lee and his family is set forth in a most interesting way. Then hampden-sydney, as it was in the early seventies, receives the attention it deserves. The great worthies of the Seminary faculty are mentioned and just estimates of them are made. To the readers of the record this portion of the book will probably be most interesting. Even Walker Crawley is not forgotten, though the reference to this unique person is brief and not perhaps as laudatory as Walker would have wished it to be. It Should be stated, however, that the names of Hampden Sydney men are found all through the volume; for the contribution of the College to the work of missions has been great, and the Secretary came in contact with many of them. Synopsis Hoosiers and the American Story by : Madison, James H.

A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

Synopsis The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 8 by : Robert K. Brock

Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 8: July, 1934 Moreover, many a boy who accepts a bid and joins a fraternity is not financially able to do so, and yet attaches such importance to being a fraternity man that he feels that he cannot decline. The result is that he either puts an additional burden on his parents, who may be making a great effort to give him an education, or else he leaves college in debt to his fraternity, thus impairing his sense of obligation and putting an additional charge on those who do pay their dues and contribute their part to the social demands made on the chapter. What would seem to be of greater importance to the fraternity itself is the fact that a number of boys whose breeding, ability, and promise would make them most desirable and congenial fraternity men and reflect credit on the fraternity, have to decline because they cannot afford the cost. Synopsis Claude A. Swanson of Virginia by : Henry C. FerrellJr.

Spanning most of the years of the one-party South, the public career of Virginian Claude A. Swanson, congressman, governor, senator, and secretary of the navy, extended from the second administration of Grover Cleveland into that of Franklin Roosevelt. His record, writes Henry C. Ferrell, Jr., in this definitive biography, is that of "a skillful legislative diplomat and an exceedingly wise executive encompassed in the personality of a professional politician." As a congressman, Swanson abandoned Cleveland's laissez faire doctrines to become the leading Virginia spokesman for William Jennings Bryan and the Democratic platform of 1896. His achievements as a reform governor are equaled by few Virginia chief executives. In the Senate, Swanson worked to advance the programs of Woodrow Wilson. In the 1920s, he contributed to formulation of Democratic alternatives to Republican policies. In Roosevelt's New Deal cabinet, he helped the Navy obtain favorable treatment during a decade of isolation. The warp and woof of local politics are well explicated by Ferrell to furnish insight into personalities and events that first produced, then sustained, Swan-son's electoral success. He examines Virginia educational, moral, and social reforms; disfranchisement movements; racial and class politics; and the impact of the woman's vote. And he records the growth of the Hampton Roads military-industrial complex, which Swanson brought about. In Virginia, Swanson became a dominant political figure, and Ferrell's study challenges previous interpretations of Virginia politics between 1892 and 1932 that pictured a powerful, reactionary Democratic "Organization," directed by Thomas Staples Martin and his successor Harry Flood Byrd, Sr., defeating would-be progressive reformers. A forgotten Virginia emerges here, one that reveals the pervasive role of agrarians in shaping the Old Dominion's politics and priorities.

Excerpt from The Record of the Hampden-Sydney Alumni Association, Vol. 8: October 1933 Those in charge of the arrangements have wisely chosen as the date for the celebration the twenty-seventh and twenty-eighth of October, which falls at the same time as home-coming Day and, in this way, there will be even a greater inducement for former members to return. The Alumni of the Chapter will have the opportunity not only to meet their brothers of college days but will in this way have an occasion to foregather with other college mates attracted by the Home Coming. After fifty years, the Chapter to-day is possibly more flourishing than at any time in its long history, having in its membership a number of campus leaders and excellent students. The record extends its congratulations to the Chapter and a welcome to returning Alumni and other guests and bespeaks for the occasion an event full of enjoyment and one that will be long remembered in the annals of Upsilon Chapter and the College itself.
