Synopsis The Primitive Sabbath Restored by Christ by : James Johnston

Excerpt from The Primitive Sabbath Restored by Christ: An Historical Argument Derived From Ancient Records of China, Egypt, and Other Lands In putting into circulation the remaining copies of this pamphlet, I beg to call attention to some fresh light which has been thrown on the subject it treats of by recent discoveries in the buried cities of the old, or rather the early world, in the very region where our race was cradled after the flood, at or near the spot where Adam came fresh from his Maker's hand. We cannot enter upon the arguments for the traces of a Sabbath, as dug up from the ruins of Nineveh and Babylon, and the translations from the records of the still more ancient Accad. (Gen. x. 10.) Those interested will find an article on the subject by the writer, in the Catholic Presbyterian of January, 1881, published by J. Nisbet & Co., Berners Street, London. We may however say in passing, that the evidence thence adduced, adds greatly to the strength of our argument for the pre-mosaic, we may add the Primitive and Divine institution of the Sabbath. Its recurrence, every seventh day - its character, "a day of rest for the heart" - its very name "Sabbattu," are given in a way which leaves little to be desired, when taken in connection with other testimony, so abundantly in our hands from other sources. The publication of our pamphlet in 1878, led to much learned enquiry in China, especially regarding the day marked by the character "Bit," which I found in the Foh-Kien Imperial Almanac, referred to on p. 12, the origin and meaning of which no Chinese scholar could explain.
