Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of South–South Migration and Inequality by : Heaven Crawley
This open access handbook examines the phenomenon of South-South migration and its relationship to inequality in the Global South, where at least a third of all international migration takes place. Drawing on contributions from nearly 70 leading migration scholars, mainly from the Global South, the handbook challenges dominant conceptualisations of migration, offering new perspectives and insights that can inform theoretical and policy understandings and unlock migration’s development potential. The handbook is divided into four parts, each highlighting often overlooked mobility patterns within and between regions of the Global South, as well as the inequalities faced by those who move. Key cross-cutting themes include gender, race, poverty and income inequality, migration decision making, intermediaries, remittances, technology, climate change, food security and migration governance. The handbook is an indispensable resource on South-South migration and inequality for academics, researchers, postgraduates and development practitioners.

Synopsis African Perspectives on South–South Migration by : Meron Zeleke
This book investigates the diverse and dynamic forms of migration within Africa. Centring themes of agency, resource flows, and transnational networks, the book examines the enduring appeal of the Global South as a place of origin, transit, and destination. Popular media, government pronouncements, and much of the global research discourse continue to be oriented towards migration from the Global South to the Global North, despite the fact that the vast majority of migration is South-South. This book moves beyond these mischaracterisations and instead distinctly focuses on the agency of African migrants and the creative strategies they employ while planning their routes within and across the African continent. Case studies explore the flow of resources such as people, money, skills, and knowledge throughout the continent, while also casting a light on the lived experiences of migrants as they negotiate their sometimes precarious and vulnerable positions. Underpinned by intensive empirical studies, this book challenges prevailing narratives and provides a new way of thinking about South-South Migration. Composed by a majority of scholars from the Global South, the book will be crucial reading for researchers, students, and policy makers with a focus on South-South Migration, Migration and Inequalities, Migration and Development, and Refugee and Humanitarian Studies.

Synopsis The Elgar Companion to Migration and the Sustainable Development Goals by : Nicola Piper
This dynamic Companion explores the connections - and disconnections - between migration and sustainable development as articulated by the UN’s Agenda 2030 and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Providing a critical appraisal of Agenda 2030, it examines the extent to which the SDGs encompass migration and migrant-related experiences within the context of the pledge to ‘leave no-one behind’.

Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of Race and Ethnic Inequalities in Education by : Peter A.J. Stevens
This authoritative, state-of-the-art reference work builds on its first edition to provide a cutting-edge systematic review of the relationship between race/ethnicity and educational inequality. Studying 25 different national contexts drawn from every inhabited continent on earth and building upon material from the earlier edition, the work analyses educational policies, practices and research on minority students, immigrants and refugees. The editors and contributors explore principal research traditions from countries as diverse as Argentina, China, Norway and South Africa, examining the factors promoting social cohesion as well as considerations regarding the use of international test score data. Seamlessly integrating findings of national reviews, the editors and contributors analyse how national contexts of race/ethnic relations shape the character and content of educational inequalities, and deftly map out new directions for future research in the area. Global in its perspective and definitive in content, this one-stop volume will be an indispensable reference resource for a wide range of academics, students and researchers in the fields of education, sociology, race and ethnicity studies and social policy. Synopsis The Palgrave Handbook of Disability and Citizenship in the Global South by : Brian Watermeyer
This handbook questions, debates and subverts commonly held assumptions about disability and citizenship in the global postcolonial context. Discourses of citizenship and human rights, so elemental to strategies for addressing disability-based inequality in wealthier nations, have vastly different ramifications in societies of the Global South, where resources for development are limited, democratic processes may be uncertain, and access to education, health, transport and other key services cannot be taken for granted. In a broad range of areas relevant to disability equity and transformation, an eclectic group of contributors critically consider whether, when and how citizenship may be used as a lever of change in circumstances far removed from UN boardrooms in New York or Geneva. Debate is polyvocal, with voices from the South engaging with those from the North, disabled people with nondisabled, and activists and politicians intersecting with researchers and theoreticians. Along the way, accepted wisdoms on a host of issues in disability and international development are enriched and problematized. The volume explores what life for disabled people in low and middle income countries tells us about subjects such as identity and intersectionality, labour and the global market, family life and intimate relationships, migration, climate change, access to the digital world, participation in sport and the performing arts, and much else.

Synopsis Mapping Southern Routes of Migrant Women by : Sondra Cuban
Whereas most migration research still focuses on South to North migration, this book shines a light on mobilities within the Global South. Using migration to and within Chile as a case study, the book looks at the experiences of women, who make up a large proportion of migrants within Latin America. Mapping the experiences, aspirations and struggles of women moving to and in Chile, the book exposes the unexpected issues encountered by migrant women in their new destination country, particularly the discrimination that leaves them feeling invisible, unsettled, and, immobile. Within the region there is a long history of feminized migration and domestic labour circuits that spurs migrants’ residential movements but slows their social progress. Yet despite these challenges, the migrant women expressed their agency through the support networks they created among their compatriots and their transnational families. Overall, the book demonstrates the growing migrant populations that exist within the Global South and the impact of domestic and care labour markets in driving gendered migration in particular. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students in the fields of mobilities and migration, cultural geography, international development, and gender studies, especially those with an interest in Latin America.
