The city of Norwich, a major textile centre in the 18th century, led the way in the manufacture of shawls based on traditional Indian styles and designs. This text includes background information on the Norwich shawl, placing the garment in the context of contemporary fashion design and the history of the textile industry. Originating in pre-historic times as a representative plant form, it has been in constant use, in one way or another, for over 2000 years. When introduced into Europe late in the eighteenth century, the pattern was seen as something exotic and was soon enthusiastically copied by textile manufacturers in Britain and France.
