Synopsis The Moonpool by : P. T. Deutermann
I remembered it from high school chemistry, one of those experiments where we made hydrogen. It was more of an acidic sensation on the palate than a real smell, but I recognized it. The pile of spent fuel at the bottom was beginning to outgas. Next would come the fire to end all fires. . . . A private detective working in Wilmington, North Carolina, is found dead in a gas-station restroom, apparently poisoned. But when her body sets off radiation alarms in the pathologist's office, suspicion falls on the nearby Helios nuclear power plant, a heavily guarded facility with supposedly failsafe procedures. As the FBI, local police, and the power plant's own security team investigate, ex-cop Cam Richter, head of the agency that employed the dead woman, begins his own inquiries. What was his detective investigating? And how could one person be poisoned by radiation without others being exposed? Cam soon finds himself up against powerful forces that will stop at nothing to keep the plant's problems secret. The most vulnerable part of Helios is its "moonpool"βthe radioactive storage pond that cools spent but volatile reactor fuel and must be kept completely full. Racing against time, Cam discovers an inside threat, which will use the plant's own systems to begin an unstoppable, disastrous sequence of events. The Moonpool is a terrific thrill-ride, filled with insider details about the ultimate terrorist threat and how it might unfold.

Synopsis The Metal Monster by : Abraham Grace Merritt
This early work by Abraham Grace Merritt was originally published in 1920 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Metal Monster' is a fantasy novel about Dr. Goodwin's travels in the Himalayas and the mysterious metal beings he encounters there. It tells the tale of adventurous explorers who discover an unknown world. Abraham Grace Merritt - also known by his byline, A. Merritt - was born on the 20th January, 1884 in New Jersey, America. Merritt's stories typically revolved around conventional pulp magazine themes. His heroes are gallant Irishmen or Scandinavians, his villains treacherous Germans or Russians and his heroines often virginal, mysterious and scantily clad. Merritt married twice, once in the 1910s to Eleanore Ratcliffe, with whom he raised an adopted daughter, and again in the thirties to Eleanor H. Johnson.

Synopsis The Moon Pool by : Sophie Littlefield
North Dakota is like nowhere Colleen has ever seen. Vast plains of silver snow, studded with shimmering black pools, lit by flares of orange light. This is the landscape that swallowed her son. Across town, another mother also searches for her missing boy. He too disappeared from the oilfields where he worked. And no-one seems to care that he is gone. These two women must work together to find their sons. But what they discover might destroy them both...

Synopsis ROV β86: Remotely Operated Vehicles by : Robert L. Wernli
There is now an awareness within the industry, particularly as oil companies direct considerable resources towards developing diverless production systems, that a fully integrated approach to equipment design and intervention is necessary to achieve an acceptable system. The requirement for an integrated approach to equipment design and intervention is applicable not only to diverless depths but to all subsea structures, equipment and intervention techniques in whatever depth. Fortunately the inherent dexterity of the diver does not impact so severely on design as other intervention techniques. However the benefits of an integrated approach are still applicable and the use of such simple "diver aids" as cutting guides and subsea markings installed prior to the installation of jackets and subsea equipment can have a significant impact on the cost of intervention. This paper examines the requirements and limitations in designing subsea equipment for Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) intervention. For the oil company embarking on the development of a diverless production system, be it totally diverless because of the envisaged water depth or primarily diverless with the possibility of diver back up, the intervention techniques adopted will strongly influence the final system design. The necessity to undertake an extensive development programme to produce the optimum intervention system is very costly, requires long lead times and comprehensive testing particularly where novel solutions are adopted. It is a daunting prospect for even the most progressive of oil companies.

Synopsis Offshore Structure Hydrodynamics by : Bernard Molin
Newly updated and translated into English for the first time, this standalone handbook perfectly combines background and theory with real-world experiments. All key topics are covered, including environmental conditions, wave theories, hydrostatics, and wave and current loads, with emphasis on nonlinear wave body interaction. Focus is given to model testing, an important component in the design of offshore structures. Recent results on the hydrodynamics of perforated structures, moonpool and gap resonance, and third-order interaction effects, have been added to this updated version. Based on practical experience from multiple industry collaborations, combined with lectures that have been honed and improved over more than 30 years, the pedagogical, real-world approach in this book make it an ideal companion for graduate students and researchers as well as ocean engineers.

Synopsis Introduction to Permanent Plug and Abandonment of Wells by : Mahmoud Khalifeh
This open access book offers a timely guide to challenges and current practices to permanently plug and abandon hydrocarbon wells. With a focus on offshore North Sea, it analyzes the process of plug and abandonment of hydrocarbon wells through the establishment of permanent well barriers. It provides the reader with extensive knowledge on the type of barriers, their functioning and verification. It then discusses plug and abandonment methodologies, analyzing different types of permanent plugging materials. Last, it describes some tests for verifying the integrity and functionality of installed permanent barriers. The book offers a comprehensive reference guide to well plugging and abandonment (P&A) and well integrity testing. The book also presents new technologies that have been proposed to be used in plugging and abandoning of wells, which might be game-changing technologies, but they are still in laboratory or testing level. Given its scope, it addresses students and researchers in both academia and industry. It also provides information for engineers who work in petroleum industry and should be familiarized with P&A of hydrocarbon wells to reduce the time of P&A by considering it during well planning and construction.
