Synopsis The Maritime Codes of Spain and Portugal (Classic Reprint) by : Francis William Raikes

Excerpt from The Maritime Codes of Spain and Portugal In the course of practice extending over a quarter of a century, mainly in the High Court of Admiralty and its successor, the Admiralty Section of the Probate, Divorce and Admiralty Division, I have frequently come in contact with an urgent necessity for some knowledge of the Maritime Law of Foreign Countries. Pursuing the study in the intervals of a busy life, I thought it might be that others, both those practising the Law and also Shipowners, Merchants, and Underwriters brought in contact with the practical effect of those Laws, might desire to see them in a more accessible form than they could be generally obtained in. I therefore proceeded to publish such translations as I made, or, in some cases, edited, in the Nautical Magazine and Law Magazine and Review, and now am trying the experiment of publishing in a separate form. The present volume gives the Maritime Law of the Iberian Peninsula. Having regard to the immense trade between England and the Peninsula, in ore, fruit and wine, not to mention other matters, and the large passenger traffic carried in British vessels between the Peninsula and South America, and the number of British vessels which call for coals and other purposes at Vigo, Teneriffe, Lisbon, Las Palmas, and St. Vincent, it would seem an appropriate commencement. If this little volume receives sufficient support the series will be continued. I had the kind permission of the late Lord Hannen to dedicate the series to him. I now, alas, can only dedicate it to his memory, a memory which will survive, so long as the practice and study of the Law remains, as that of a great judge, and, as long as any of those who had the inestimable privilege of practising before him survive, as that of the most patient instructor and kindest friend. Synopsis The Jews and Moors in Spain by : Joseph Krauskopf

"This volume is a reprint of newspaper reports of a series of lectures delivered by the author from the pulpit of Congregation B'nai Jehudah, Kansas City, Mo., during the Fall and Winter of 1885-1886. The lectures were prepared to fulfill the requirements of popular discourses, and designed to convey information upon a highly important epoch of the world's history, that is almost neglected in English literature. The thought of publishing these lectures in book form was utterly foreign to the author throughout their preparation, until an urgent solicitation from very many persons, both Jews and Gentiles, in all parts of this country, whose interest in these lectures was aroused by their wide-spread republication by the Press, made it a duty."--Goodreads.com.

Synopsis Portuguese, Dutch and Chinese in Maritime Asia, c.1585 - 1800 by : George Bryan Souza

This collection of 13 essays deals with a range of topics concerning Portuguese, Dutch and Chinese merchants, commodities and commerce in maritime Asia in the early modern period from c. 1585-1800. They are based on exhaustive research and careful analysis of diverse sets of archival materials found around the globe. Written by a leading authority on global maritime economic history and the history of European Expansion, each individual essay addresses a topic of fundamental importance to those interested in knowing more about what merchants did (with which resources and under what conditions) and how they did it, what were the commodities that were incorporated into local, regional, intra-regional and global economies, and what was the role and function of early modern maritime trade and commerce in economic development in general and especially in Asia in the early modern era, from c. 1585-1800. A number of them, in particular, relate the individual or collective merchant experience to specific European (Portuguese and Dutch) imperial projects and their contestation amongst themselves and their indigenous neighbours over portions of the period. Collectively, they form an exposition of a utilitarian view of human activity under a wide-ranging different set of circumstances and conditions but with similar patterns of behaviors and responses that are largely independent from ethnic, racial or religious stereotyping. The work therefore should raise new issues and avenues of research concerning these agents and objects in European Expansion, Asian and Global History.

Synopsis International Law and Ocean Use Management by : Lawrence Juda

This book places contemporary problems of ocean use management in historical context beginning with the time of Hugo Grotius, whose seminal 1609 work The Freedom of the Seas was the basis of ocean law for the next three centuries. Individual use problems are dealt with in detail and include overfishing, migrating fish stocks and fish wars, oil drilling, deep sea mining and marine pollution. Throughout the author notes the need to seek solutions in ocean management from a more integrated perspective. Emphasis is placed on the United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea and the resulting agreements. This book therefore presents a unique breadth of view which will make it salient to policy makers, diplomats, scholars and ocean users.

Synopsis English as she is spoke; or, a jest in sober earnest by : José da Fonseca

English as she is spoke by Jose de Fonseca is a befuddled Portuguese-to-English dictionary which was intentionally published as a humorous guide. Excerpt: "A choice of familiar dialogues, clean of gallicisms, and despoiled phrases, it was missing yet to studious Portuguese and Brazilian Youth; and also to persons of others nations, that wish to know the Portuguese language. We sought all we may do, to correct that want, composing and devising the present little work in two parts."
