Adolescent Health Care: Clinical Issues provides an understanding of the main health problems and concerns facing teenagers. This book discusses the major legal decisions and thinking on confidentiality, consent, minor's right to health services, and the limitations of parental and medical authority. Organized into seven parts encompassing 27 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the main issues faced by any health care provider working with adolescents. This text then discusses the ways in which youths visualize their own health problems. Other chapters consider the normal nutritional needs of the teenager as well as the physically- and learning-impaired segment of the adolescent population. This book discusses as well the development of childhood sexuality from infancy through adolescence. The final chapter deals with counseling issues with specific recommendations on how to work with the teenager in crisis. This book is a valuable resource for medical practitioners, psychiatrists, physiologists, nutritionists, and social workers.

Synopsis Adolescents by : Inger P. Davis

This book deals with ways of helping families cope with the difficulty of rais ing adolescents. Professional social workers - along with other human ser vice professionals - encounter these families in numerous settings: child welfare and family service agencies, hospitals, schools, community mental health clinics, residential treatment centers, juvenile halls and detention centers, recreational and vocational training organizations, and many others. While families from all walks of life may be found in these settings, families who have suffered the additional stresses of poverty, discrimination, and the consequences of physical and mental illness are commonly overrepresented. Even under the best of circumstances, the adolescent years often put the strongest family structures to the test - sometimes to the breaking point. A recent national study of over one thousand average, middle-income, two parent families reviewed the strengths, stresses, and satisfactions of the family life cycle (Olson and McCubbin 1983). As many would expect, families with adolescents were found to experience more stress and lower levels of family adaptability, cohesion, and marital and family satisfaction than any other developmental stage. The families with adolescents who fared best were those with such marital resources as good communication and conflict resolution skills, satisfying sexual relations, and good parent-adolescent communication.

Synopsis The Promise of Adolescence by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

Adolescenceâ€"beginning with the onset of puberty and ending in the mid-20sâ€"is a critical period of development during which key areas of the brain mature and develop. These changes in brain structure, function, and connectivity mark adolescence as a period of opportunity to discover new vistas, to form relationships with peers and adults, and to explore one's developing identity. It is also a period of resilience that can ameliorate childhood setbacks and set the stage for a thriving trajectory over the life course. Because adolescents comprise nearly one-fourth of the entire U.S. population, the nation needs policies and practices that will better leverage these developmental opportunities to harness the promise of adolescenceâ€"rather than focusing myopically on containing its risks. This report examines the neurobiological and socio-behavioral science of adolescent development and outlines how this knowledge can be applied, both to promote adolescent well-being, resilience, and development, and to rectify structural barriers and inequalities in opportunity, enabling all adolescents to flourish.

Synopsis Pediatric and Adolescent Obstetrics and Gynecology by : J.P. Lavery

This book covers a broad area-the problems associated with female develop ment-from the appearance of gender abnormalities in the delivery room, through the trials of pubescence, early maturation, and precocious child bearing. Experts from many diverse fields of scholarship have contributed chapters covering a wide range of subjects. The contributors have concentrated on their areas of expertise. The broad range of this book is unique; no other textbook covers as many areas. The diversity of subjects covered will help the reader (gynecologist, pediatrician, nurse, health counselor, social worker, or psy chologist) to understand both the physical and psychological problems which beset the female, from birth to adolescence. Because of the wealth of information presented, we hope that this volume will serve as a reference source and as a basis for further in-depth studies. The editors wish to express sincere thanks for the efforts "above and beyond the call of duty" on the part of many members of our staff. A special thank you to Carrie Marcell R.N., our research nurse and University of Louisville coordinator for this project, for her time and effort in putting up with the vagaries of the editors; and to Betty Jones and Linda Grear for their fine secretarial work. Special recognition is due Sue Koenig, whose patience with us in adapting the text to our word processor made our job a great deal easier.
