Synopsis Is Chicken Skin a Local Delicacy? by : Michael Herr

If you've ever been to the islands, especially Kaua'i, this is one book you'll want for your collection. This is the second book of the Primo's Talk Story Book series but it stands alone. This book continues the adventures and misadventures around Primo's Bar in the town of Kapa'a on the island of Kaua'i. Once you've read Chicken Skin you'll want a copy of the first book in the series The Kaua'i Obake Bar. The main character, Bryan Maegher, a young hapa writer (half-Hawaiian and half-Irish) recounts the various goings-on at Primo's. The regulars there are an interesting group with characters such as Waikane (the last full-blooded menehune on the island) and Goro (a Japanese obake -ghost- with a fondness for whisky). Add to this group the occasional appearance of others such as Madame Pele or secret Government agents on the hunt for a missing A-bomb and you have a lively mix. Chicken Skin is the Hawaiian equivalent of goosebumps, and there's chicken skin aplenty in this book. And plenty of laughs.

Synopsis Da Kine Talk by : Elizabeth Ball Carr

Hawaii is without parallel as a crossroads where languages of East and West have met and interacted. The varieties of English (including neo-pidgin) heard in the Islands today attest to this linguistic and cultural encounter. "Da kine talk" is the Island term for the most popular of the colorful dialectal forms--speech that captures the flavor of Hawaii's multiracial community and reflects the successes (and failures) of immigrants from both East and West in learning to communicate in English.
