Synopsis The Indiana Dunes Revealed by : Frank V. Dudley
A native Midwesterner's timeless portrayals of a fragile sanctuary The Indiana Dunes Revealed offers the first comprehensive examination of a widely collected, much loved, and ecologically significant artist. Described by art historian William Gerdts as "one of the finest painters working in the Midwest in the first decades of the twentieth century," Frank V. Dudley (1868-1957) was a native of Wisconsin who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago before going on to establish a long exhibition record both there and across the country. He also dedicated over forty years of his professional life as a landscape painter to the promotion and preservation the Indiana Dunes. Today, thanks in part to Dudley's efforts, this unique geographical region enjoys state and federal protection and provides ecologists from around the world with a living laboratory unlike anything else. The Indiana Dunes Revealed serves as the accompanying catalogue for the exhibition of Dudley's work showing from August 15 to November 30, 2006 at the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University. Featuring 150 color and 70 black-and-white images, it celebrates Dudley's unique artistic legacy, documents the exhibition, and demonstrates the painter's importance to environmentalists and naturalists, especially during the many years of national debate over the designation of parts of the dunes as a national park. In some areas, Dudley's painting may be the only record of a lost dunescape, and as the struggle between development and preservation continues, his enduring art reminds us of the need for a sustainable environment for the Great Lakes.

Synopsis Dreams of Duneland by : Kenneth J. Schoon
The towering sand dunes along Lake Michigan, not far from Chicago, are one of the most unexpected natural features of Indiana. The second edition of Dreams of Duneland beautifully illustrates the dunes region, from the past to the present. Since the first edition, the Indiana Dunes area has become an official national park. With more than 400 stunning images, many of them new, Dreams of Duneland showcases the breathtaking sand dunes, as well as the rest of this newly minted park, which includes savanna, wetland, prairie, and forest and is home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. Kenneth J. Schoon reveals how the preserved area of the Indiana Dunes National Park—which sits by residential communities, businesses, and cultural attractions—has a long history of competition among farmers, fur traders, industrialists, and conservationists. Featuring a new foreword and afterword and many updates throughout, this gorgeous new edition will have you planning a trip to the extraordinary Indiana Dunes.

Synopsis Spearheading Environmental Change by : Jill P. May
Spearheading Environmental Change: The Legacy of Indiana Congressman Floyd J. Fithian describes the life of a four-term United States congressman, focusing on his role in the emerging environmental movement in late twentieth-century America. Spearheading Environmental Change highlights Fithian’s legislative efforts regarding three water-related issues that profoundly concerned Hoosier and midwestern voters: creating a national park on the Indiana shoreline of Lake Michigan; canceling dam construction near Purdue University; and mitigating flooding in the Kankakee River Basin. The book also covers Fithian’s positions on ecologically sensitive issues such as pesticides, noise pollution, fossil fuels, and nuclear power. Largely remembered for his participation in the Democratic reform wave that took over Congress in 1975 post-Watergate (the so-called Class of ’74) and as an advocate for Hoosier farmers, Fithian has been overlooked for his role as a force to be reckoned with on the House floor when it came to the nation’s environmental challenges. Fithian was a highly ethical, pragmatic reformer bent on preserving his country’s natural resources. Spearheading Environmental Change gives Fithian the credit he deserves as an environmental warrior on the national stage.
