Synopsis The Heroes of Early Israel (Classic Reprint) by : Irving Francis Wood

Excerpt from The Heroes of Early Israel The passages at the end of the chapters are those upon which the chapters are based. If possible, readings in them should be assigned as a part of the lesson, with such topics, suggestions and questions as may best fit the need of the class. To gain the power of intelligent reading of the English Bible should be one of the objects of the course. I wish to acknowledge obligations to Professor E. Hershey Sneath, the editor of this series, and to Professors H. T. Fowler and G. A. Dahl for sug gestions of general plan, to Miss Eva M. Porter, of the Capen School, to Mr. John Dallas, of the Taft School, and to Mr. T. R. Hyde, of the Hill School. Synopsis Heroes of Hebrew History (Classic Reprint) by : Samuel Wilberforce

Excerpt from Heroes of Hebrew History Here is the fountain-head of Hebrew hero-life - the time when Abram was born in the house of his father Terah. Here we stand amongst the great progenitors of our race. Abram's birth was but two hundred and eighty years after the flood: a shorter period than has passed since Queen Elizabeth sat under a tree which is still alive in Hatfield Park, and saw the approach of the royal messenger who brought her, instead of the expected warrant to a dungeon and a scaffold, the tidings of her succession to the throne of England. Synopsis The Kings of Israel and Judah (Classic Reprint) by : George Rawlinson

Excerpt from The Kings of Israel and Judah The Books of Kings and Chronicles form the main stjurce for the History of the Kings of Israel and Judah. They require, however, to be supplemented, especially for the later kings, by a careful study of the Prophetical Scriptures, particularly of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Amos, Micah, Habakkuk and Zephaniah. Local colouring, the life and manners of the time, and the feelings of those contemporary with the events described, are derivable almost wholly from this latter source, which furnishes them often in tolerable abundance. The "Antiquities" of Josephus supply less material than might have been expected, and the character of all additional material derived from this quarter requires to be weighed in the scales of a careful and sober criticism. Considerable light is thrown on the history of some of the kings by contemporary notices contained in the monuments of Egypt and Assyria. It has been the endeavour of the writer, so far as the limits of space allowed, to make full use of all these various sources of information. His labours have been much lightened by the excellent work done by many of his predecessors in the field of Sacred History, as especially by the writers of the articles on the several kings in Dr. Smith's "Dictionary of the Bible," Kitto's "Biblical Cyclopaedia," Winer's "Realworterbuch," and Ersch and Gruber's "Cyclopadie."
