An illustrated translation of the Gospel of Thomas in plain English with explanatory notes In 1945, twelve ancient books were found inside a sealed jar near Nag Hammadi, Egypt. One of those Gnostic tractates buried in the sand was the Gospel of Thomas, one of the jewels of universal spiritual literature which is considered by some scholars as the fifth Gospel. It is an anthology of 114 logia, or sayings, attributed to Jesus and collected by Jude Thomas, his brother. It is the earliest extant collection of sayings from the Galilean. Bernard Luguernr proposes a lively and modern translation of this apocryphal Gospel.

In this new commentary on the controversial Gospel of Thomas, Simon Gathercole provides the most extensive analysis yet published of both the work as a whole and of the individual sayings contained in it. This commentary offers a fresh analysis of Thomas not from the perspective of form criticism and source criticism but seeks to elucidate the meaning of the work and its constituent elements in its second-century context. With its lucid discussion of the various controversial aspects of Thomas, and treatment of the various different scholarly views, this is a foundational work of reference for scholars not just of apocryphal Gospels, but also for New Testament scholars, Classicists and Patrologists.

In December 1945, two Egyptian fellahin, digging for natural fertilizer in the Nile River valley unearthed a sealed storage jar. The jar proved to hold treasure of an unexpected sort: a collection of some fifty-two ancient manuscripts, most of which reflect the teachings of a mystical religious movement we call Gnosticism (from the Greek word gnosis, "knowledge"). The texts are also, with few exceptions, Christian documents, and thus they provide us with valuable new information about the character of the early church, and about the Gnostic Christians within the church. In this volume, Marvin W. Meyer has produced a new English translation for general readers of four of the most important and revealing of these early Christian texts -- the Secret Book of James, the Gospel of Thomas, the Book of Thomas, and the Secret Book of John.

The secret teachings of Jesus decoded for the twenty-first century Over two thousand years ago a being was tasked with delivering an important message to a planet, in a distant galaxy. That being was called Jesus. There was a problem. The period in which Jesus entered that world meant His message would not be understood for over two millennia. The solution. Find a person who was not influenced by the culture of the time and give this person the message. Encrypt the message so it could be kept safe for the future, when it could be understood. That message is in the Gospel of Thomas. This book decodes the message.

"Since its discovery the Gospel of Thomas has been the subject of intense study for those with interests in the developments of earliest Christianity. Three questions remain unanswered in contemporary scholarship: (1) When was Thomas composed?; (2) What is the relationship between Thomas and the canonical Gospels?; (3) What theological outlook is presented in the Gospel of Thomas? This volume provides a comprehensive overview of recent scholarly opinions on these three questions" -- Amazon.com.
