Synopsis The Golden Windmill and Other Stories (Classic Reprint) by : Stacy Aumonier
Excerpt from The Golden Windmill and Other Stories As you know, it is considered rather provocative to launch a book of short stories. It is asking for trouble. The least I can do is to offer a brief apology; and I cannot do this Without writing a preface, which requires an apology in itself. Unless you are a Bernard Shaw you find a preface a most embarrassing business. Having written the stories I would rather talk about anything else - old furniture, for instance. Perhaps my best policy will be to start by attacking you, 0 Reader, friend or enemy, as the case may be. You are a most exacting fellow. Far more exacting than a reader of novels, or works of reference, or even his tories; for the reason that your criticism follows a more circumscribed tradition. You are a kind of gourmet Whose palate is acutely sensitive to accustomed flavors and satieties. It is always easier to be an epicure of a small repast than of a banquet. A novel is less easily digested. You may enjoy it in parts, or derive satis faction from the matter, or from the manner of tel] ing, but With a short story you require a bonne bouche. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Synopsis The King of the Golden River by : John Ruskin
Excerpt from The King of the Golden River: And Other Stories The youngest brother, Gluck, was as com pletely opposed, in both appearance and char acter, to his seniors as could possibly be imag ined or desired. He was not above twelve years Old, fair, blue-eyed, and kind in temper to every living thing. He did not, of course, agree particularly well with his brothers, or rather, they did not agree with him. He was usually appointed to the honorable office of turnspit, when there was anything to roast, which was not Often for, to do the brothers justice, they were hardly less sparing upon themselves than Upon other people. At other times he used to clean the Shoes, floors, and sometimes the plates, occasionally getting what was left on them, by way of encouragement, and awholesale quantity of dry blows, by way of education. Synopsis The Golden Scarecrow (Classic Reprint) by : Hugh Walpole
Excerpt from The Golden Scarecrow He spent there the two Christmases of 1890 and 1891 (when he was ten and eleven years of age), and it is with the second of these that the following incident, and in deed the whole of this book, has to do. Hugh Seymour could not, at the period of which I write, be called an attractive child; he was not even interesting or un usual. He was small, with bones so brittle that it seemed that, at any moment, he might crack and splinter into sharp little pieces; but although he was so thin his face had a white and overhanging ap pearance, his cheeks being pale and puffy. And his under-lip iutted forward in front of projecting teeth - he was known as the White Rabbit by his school-fellows. He was not, however, so ugly as this descrip tion would apparently convey, for his large, grey eyes, soft, and' even at times agree ably humorous, were pleasant and cheerful. Synopsis The Golden Goose (Classic Reprint) by : Leslie Brooke
Excerpt from The Golden Goose Thereupon the second son went into the wood, and the Mother gave him, as she had given to the eldest, a sweet cake and a bottle of wine. The little old man met him also, and begged for a small slice of cake and a drink of wine. But the second son spoke out quite plainly. What I give to you I lose myself - be off with you, and he left the little man standing there, and walked on. Punishment was not long in coming to him, for he hadgiven but two strokes at a tree when he cut his leg so badly that he had to be carried home.
