A famous African regiment during the Great War The First World War was, of course, principally fought in Europe. The established European nations had by the turn of the 20th century expanded their influence across the globe, thus gaining advantages in commerce and colonisation, Germany, comparatively new to nationhood, was a late comer to global imperialism but nevertheless maintained colonies in the wider world particularly in west and east Africa. When war broke out the forces in the colonies of both sides which had hitherto lived as neighbours now became enemies. Both Germany and Britain recruited troops from local populations and the subject of this book, the Gold Coast Regiment, were among them. The Gold Coast (now Ghana) in West Africa, together with Nigeria, provided excellent, strong, resourceful soldiers for the British Empire. It was logical that these troops would be most effective in African campaigns and the Gold Coast Regiment was accordingly dispatched to fight in the Cameroons and in the campaigns in East Africa. There they did fine service in actions which are described in detail in these pages. The side-show theatres of the Great War have always been of special interest to students of this period and so this book is essential reading on the subject. Afer playing a major role in the conquest of German West Africa (Togoland and the Cameroons) 1914-1916, the Gold Coast Regiment was moved to East Africa (so was the Nigeria Regiment) to take part in operations there against von Lettow-Vorbeck. It remained in that theatre till August 1918. The author was Governor of the Gold Coast from 1912 to 1919, and this account of the exploits of the Gold Coast Regiment is regarded as a classic; it combines a regimental history with a study of warfare in the bush. The period it covers has not appeared in the volumes of the Official History which dealt with the campaign from 1914 to 1916 only, ending before the regiment went into action.Index. On the declaration of war on the 4th August, the invasion of this German colony was promptly undertaken; and the Regiment, which had been joined at Lome, the capital of Togoland, by a small party of Tirailleurs from Dahomey, pursued the retreating enemy up the main line of railway to Kamina - the site of a very large and important German wireless installation - where, on the 28th August, he was forced to an unconditional surrender.
