Synopsis The Fundamental Social Law by : Peter Selg
The healthy social life is found When in the mirror of each human being The whole community finds its reflection And when in the community The virtue of each one is living. Rudolf Steiner understood that human social, ethical, and moral development lagged far behind what had been achieved in knowledge, science, and technology; and that what human beings had achieved in these fields rested on what caused social and moral life to be untenable for so many, namely, the universal rule of egoism and self-interest. In 1905, a historic year of political and economic crises, Rudolf Steiner formulated what he called the basic "social axiom" or "the cosmic law of work": The well-being of an entire group of individuals who work together is the greater, the less individuals claim the income resulting from their own accomplishments for themselves, that is, the more they contribute this income to their fellow workers and the more their own needs are met not through their own efforts but through the efforts of others. Underlying this "fundamental social law" is the seminal realization that human social reality pivots on the question of work and compensation. Does one work for oneself, for one's salary? Or does one work for others, the community or larger society? For Rudolf Steiner, it was critical to understand that work should be a free deed. In other words, work and income should be completely separated. In this profound work, Peter Selg traces how, at the end of the Great War, with Steiner's tireless efforts for the threefold movement, this fundamental social-spiritual insight moved into the center of his activities as an overriding practical and spiritual concern, rephrased as the "motto of social ethics," and deepened and filled with the full reality of Christ's teachings and life. Anyone interested in a just, equitable, healthy, and spirit-based social future should read The Fundamental Social Law.

Synopsis The Lighthouse Function of Social Law by : Yves Jorens
This is the conference book for the XIV European Regional Congress of the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law, dedicated to the interactions between social law and other areas of law. In recent years, labour law and social security law have been subject to various reforms and developments. Social law is however not an isolated domain but rather interacts with other fields, often even functioning as a guide or giving direction to those lost at sea. In other words: serving as a lighthouse. The key aspect addressed in this book is the existence of a connection between social law sensu stricto (labour law and social security law) and other areas of law. Pursuing an inter- and multidisciplinary approach, it gathers contributions on topical and challenging issues in four broad areas: 1. Basic and fundamental principles of European social law 2. The future in the light of the past 3. The impact of regionalisation 4. Enforcement in social law In turn, various developments can be identified in connection with these topics: the emergence of social criminal law is creating new overlaps between social and criminal law; the growing number of administrative law sanctions offers new insights into and connections between social security law and administrative law; the increasing similarity of employment in the public and private sectors raises questions about the applicability of administrative law in labour law relations; the relation between the ECHR and the articles of the Constitution opens up new perspectives on the constitutional interpretation of freedoms and on the interaction between human rights, constitutional law and social law; and lastly, there is a growing influence of EU law and international treaty law (concerning trade) on social law. Can we, by looking at these developments, draw certain conclusions at a different and innovative level? The contributions were selected by an international working group of distinguished scholars from across Europe.

Synopsis Basics on European Social Law by : Christina Hießl
European Social Law at a glance The present book sets out – in a concise manner – the social law of the European Union. Apart from core areas of European labour law, the regulation of which is based on the EU’s competence in social policy, it covers notably the numerous rights based one the free movement of workers and other EU citizens, as well as the coordination of social security. Beyond that, the book refers to other fields of EU regulation which are prone to cause conflicts between the member states’ national social law and the relevant EU norms, which remain challenging to resolve to this day. Extensive reference is made to the case law of the European Court of Justice, which continues to have a paramount role in shaping the social law of the EU as it stands. The book is primarily aimed at students confronted with European social law for the first time. Besides, it should constitute a well-structured source of reference for law practitioners in the rising number of cases where EU law is of relevance for national legal practice.
