Synopsis The Book of Isaiah by : Richard J. Bautch

Representing the highest echelon of Isaiah studies, this volume explores distinct issues that arise from the critical study of the text of Isaiah. The contributors acknowledge and comment on the exegetical contributions of distinguished biblical scholar Joseph Blenkinsopp, providing distinction and coherence to the collection. The publication between 2000 and 2004 of Blenkinsopp's 3-volume Anchor Bible commentary on Isaiah marked a significant development in Isaiah studies. Many of the articles and books now published in the field cite Blenkinsopp, testifying to how his commentary is influencing and helping shape the future direction of Isaiah studies. This volume, with its focus on his contributions, provides a fresh look at Isaiah studies in the twenty-first century. Contributors: Rainer Albertz Klaus Baltzer Hans M. Synopsis The Second Isaiah by : Christopher R. North

This all-purpose commentary is by the author of 'The Suffering Servant in Deutero-Isaiah'. It meets the needs of the specialist but most of it should be intelligible to preachers and teachers who know little or no Hebrew. The Introduction discusses the literary structure of the prophecy, the theology of Deutero-Isaiah (with some reference to current theological debate), and the problem of Salvation History. The exegetical notes are based on the author's own translation from the Hebrew text. The purpose of the book is to elucidate the message of the Prophet in the context of Scripture as a whole.

Synopsis Message and Composition of the Book of Isaiah by : Antti Laato

The study deals with the theological message and composition of the Book of Isaiah and promotes a thesis that an early Jewish reception history helps us to find perspectives to understand them. This study treats the following themes among others: 1 Hezekiah as Immanuel was an important theme in the reception as can be seen in Chronicles and Ben Sira as well as in rabbinical writings. The central event which makes Hezekiah such an important figure, was the annihilation of the Assyrian army as recounted in Isaiah 36-37. 2 The Book of Isaiah was interpreted in apocalyptic milieu as the Animal Apocalypse and Daniel show. Even though the Qumran writings do not provide any coherent way to interpret Isaianic passages its textual evidence shows how the community has found from the Book of Isaiah different concepts to characterize the division of the Jewish community to the righteous and sinful ones (cf. Isa 65-66). 3 Ezra and Nehemiah received inspiration from the theological themes of Isaianic texts of Levitical singers which were later edited in the Book of Isaiah by scribes. The formation of the Book of Isaiah then went in its own way and its theology became different from that in the Book of Ezra–Nehemiah.
