The Flight of Events, the second book of a Psychopathology of Melancholia Series, after Manie, mélancolie et facteurs blancs (Beauchesne, Paris, 2009), is a work on altruistic anguishes in manic-depressive suicides. In this book, German Arce Ross has chosen to focus on the psychological processes that occur prior to the act of suicide, rather than on the act itself. We can detect these processes in a subject during the period between the decision to commit suicide and the passage to the act. In the consideration of certain moments preceding a suicidal or criminal act, in the case of critical episodes that are non-delusional, non-hallucinated and non-acted but sometimes assimilated to psychotic or twilight moments — where we locate in particular a discontinuity or a radical rupture, albeit momentary, with the Other —, we can observe that there are things, facts, or events, that happen to the subject without any form of control over them whatsoever. In these uncontrolled intersubjective events, what the subject suffers from is a tendency to undergo the acts that he himself makes others perform. During this flight of events, it is not entirely true that the subject flees the events of his life; it is rather the events that flee.

On 25 January 2010, at 00:41:30 UTC, Ethiopian Airlines flight ET 409, a Boeing 737-800, on its way from Beirut to Addis Abeba, crashed just after take-off from Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut, Lebanon, into the Mediterranean Sea about 5 NM South West of Beirut International Airport. All 90 persons on board were killed in the accident. The investigation concluded that the probable causes of the accident were pilot errors due to loss of situational awareness. Ethiopian Airlines refutes this conclusion. Other factors that could have lead to probable causes are the increased workload and stress levels that have most likely led to the captain reaching a situation of loss of situational awareness similar to a subtle incapacitation and the F/O failure to recognize it or to intervene accordingly. Ethiopian Airlines refutes the investigation. According to the airline the final report was biased, lacking evidence, incomplete and did not present the full account of the accident.

I am waiting for Mark. For the last several months he has been missing, Garbo-like, from public life. But in reality he has been writing a new book. We have agreed to go back over the original manuscripts for this edition, to do some editing, add in some extras, delete a few choice words and phrases. His voice notches up in volume. Did you ever feel you would finish your first book? 'Oh yeah,' he sighs. 'I mean, there were so many times I thought, I'll have the book finished this year, definitely, I'll get it out this year. Then there were a couple of years where I thought, I'm never gonna do this. I don't know why. Time evaporates.' He walks over and picks up the manuscripts. He reads a bit. He laughs. 'Did I really agree to this?' he asks. Mark knows the answer. 'A couple of people who read the first book Tour De Europa,' he says, 'they either really liked it or they found it very uncomfortable. I liked the idea of it being uncomfortable. I thought that was great. I love the ambiguity. But I also loved looking back on lost conversations and instantly remembering an emotion.' A clock somewhere strikes two and a friend arrives with tea, pizza, avocado with balsamic vinegar and cream cake for afters, only to be playfully admonished by Mark, who protests, 'I can't eat all this shit!' It would appear some things never change.
