Synopsis The Evolution and Future of High Performance Management Systems by : Glenn Bassett

High performance systems are a source of major competitive advantage and a sure path to increased market share. The advantage consistently goes to the nation, the army, the team that discovers an organization design that gives it an edge in competition. Like much invention, the discovery of a high performance organization design is most likely to come about through trial and error under competitive pressure. At the threshold of the twenty-first century, critical analysis of the history of high performance offers a rich fund of historical information and insight into the course of high performance systems evolution. This book offers a beginning into a better understanding of how high performance systems develop and are superseded by ever newer and more advanced systems. From history, social science research and the lessons of present-day global operations strategy, those elements that seem fundamental to past and future high performance management are identified in this timely critique. It concludes with suggested directions for exploration in the reinvention of tomorrow's high performance systems.

Synopsis Future Trends of HPC in a Disruptive Scenario by : L. Grandinetti

The realization that the use of components off the shelf (COTS) could reduce costs sparked the evolution of the massive parallel computing systems available today. The main problem with such systems is the development of suitable operating systems, algorithms and application software that can utilise the potential processing power of large numbers of processors. As a result, systems comprising millions of processors are still limited in the applications they can efficiently solve. Two alternative paradigms that may offer a solution to this problem are Quantum Computers (QC) and Brain Inspired Computers (BIC). This book presents papers from the 14th edition of the biennial international conference on High Performance Computing - From Clouds and Big Data to Exascale and Beyond, held in Cetraro, Italy, from 2 - 6 July 2018. It is divided into 4 sections covering data science, quantum computing, high-performance computing, and applications. The papers presented during the workshop covered a wide spectrum of topics on new developments in the rapidly evolving supercomputing field – including QC and BIC – and a selection of contributions presented at the workshop are included in this volume. In addition, two papers presented at a workshop on Brain Inspired Computing in 2017 and an overview of work related to data science executed by a number of universities in the USA, parts of which were presented at the 2018 and previous workshops, are also included. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves high-performance computing.

Synopsis Library Performance and Service Competition by : Larry Nash White

A practice-driven and proven resource for library administrators of all types of libraries. The work describes how the library can identify the service environment factors impacting customers; strategic needs; identify library competitors; strategic abilities and service environment impacts; and use the combined results to develop proactive competitive responses that drive the service environment instead of reacting to the service environment. These strategic competitive responses would allow the library to increase the value of its service impact and effectiveness while increasing customer appreciation and the libraries advantage in the competitive service environment. - Written by a highly knowledgeable practitioner from the library field - Experience of the author (library and for-profit management experience) provides a hybrid/blended view of library competition and management responses from both the library and for-profit management worlds - Written to applicable to all types of libraries

Synopsis Evolving the High Performance Computing and Communications Initiative to Support the Nation's Information Infrastructure by : National Research Council

Maintaining the United States' strong lead in information technology will require continued federal support of research in this area, most of which is currently funded under the High Performance Computing and Communications Initiative (HPCCI). The Initiative has already accomplished a great deal and should be continued. This book provides 13 major recommendations for refining both HPCCI and support of information technology research in general. It also provides a good overview of the development of HPCC technologies.
